great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.-Rev. xii. 7-10. (See xii. to xx.)

Q. By what symbols does he represent the future triumph of Christianity?

A. By a great and rich city coming down out of heaven with its gates of pearl and its streets of gold, God and the Lamb being its light, and the na tions walking in its peace.

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper-stone, clear as crystal; and had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl; and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were of transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it; for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved, shall walk in the light of it; and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it.-Rev. xxi. 10-12 and 21-24. (See xx to xxii.)

LESSON XVII.

SCRIPTURAL VIEWS OF GOD.

Q. By what name was God earliest known?
A. ALMIGHTY GOD.

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.-Gen. xvii. 1.

Q. By what name was He known to Moses and the Prophets?

A. I AM, LORD, and JEHOVAH.

And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.-Exo. iii. 14.

And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty;

but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.-Exo. vi. 2, 3.

Q. By what dearer name did Christ call him? A. OUR FATHER.

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven.-Luke xi. 2.

Q. Who may call him by this endearing name? A. All mankind, because he is the Father of all. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.-Eph. iv. 6.

Q. What is the testimony of both the Old and New Testament concerning the Unity of God?

A. That there is but one God.

Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord.— Deut. vi. 4.

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. -1 Cor. viii. 6.

[ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.-1 Tim. ii. 6.

The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.-2 Cor. xi. 31.

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.-John xiv. 28.

A. Can you explain what God is?

A. No; we are taught that "He is Love," but no words are adequate to express the meaning of that term.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.-1 John iv. 7, 8.

Q. What is His will concerning mankind?
A. That all shall be saved.

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.-1 Tim. ii. 4.

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth: even in him.-Eph. i. 9, 10.

Q. Shall his will be accomplished?

A. It shall to the utmost extent.

He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?-Dan. iv. 35.

Q. Can anything separate us from his love?

A. No; nothing.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.-Rom. viii. 38, 39.
