Q. To whom did the office of High Priest belong?

A. To Aaron and his posterity.

And the Lord spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them, by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance forever.— Num. xviii. 8.

Q. What excluded any of them from the office? A. Any bodily defect.

No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest, shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the Lord made by fire; he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.Lev. xxi. 21.

Q. How could the priests be distinguished from the people in the temple?

A. By their dress.

And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle; and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.Exo. xxviii. 4

Q. How were the priests supported?

A. By the offerings of the people.

All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the first fruits of them which they

shall offer unto the Lord, them have I given thee. And whatsoever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto the Lord, shall be thine; every

one that is clean in thine house shall eat of it.Num. xviii. 12, 13.

Q. What do you understand by this being called an "Everlasting Priesthood?”

A. One that should last throughout their generations.

And thou shalt anoint them as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office; for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. -Exo. xl. 15.

Q. When did this order of the priesthood end? A. When Christ who is our great High Priest," gave himself up to death for us all.

And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.-Heb. vii. 23, 24.

JEWISH FORMS OF WORSHIP.

Q. In what did the Jewish forms of worship consist?

A. In the offering of gifts and sacrifices to the Lord.

For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sin.Heb. v. 1.

Q. Where were these services first performed? A. In the tabernacle, erected by Moses, in the wilderness.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, On the first day of the first month, shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation. And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof, and it shall be holy. And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar and it shall be an altar most holy.-Exo. xl. 1, 2, 9, 10.

Q. Where were they afterwards performed?

A. In the Holy Temple erected by Solomon, in Jerusalem.

And Solomon determined to build a house for the name of the Lord, and a house for his kingdom.-2 Chron. ii, 1.

Q. How often were these services performed?

A. Those which had reference to individuals were occasional;. but those which were national were daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.
