Whose names are writ in heaven! And God, the Judge of all, declares Their every sin forgiven.

In such society as this

[ocr errors]

My weary soul would rest;

The man that dwells where Jesus is,
Must be for ever blest.

HYMN 171.

Redeeming Love.

NOW begin the heavenly theme,
Sing aloud in Jesus' name;
Ye, who his salvation prove,
Triumph in redeeming love.
Ye, who see the Father's grace
Beaming in the Saviour's face,
As to Canaan on ye move,
Praise and bless redeeming love.
Mourning souls, dry up your tears,
Banish all your guilty fears;
See your guilt and curse remove,
Cancell'd by redeeming love.
Ye, alas! who long have been
Willing slaves of death and sin,
Now from bliss no longer rove,
Stop and taste redeeming love.
Welcome all by sin opprest,
Welcome to the Saviour's breast,
Nothing brought him from above,
Nothing but redeeming love.
Hither then your music bring,
Strike aloud each tuneful string;
Mortals, join the host above,
Join to praise redeeming love.

HYMN 172.

The love of Christ.

1 TO our Redeemer's glorious name, Awake the sacred song!

O may his love, immortal flame,

Tune every heart and tongue!

His love, what mortal thought can reach ?
What mortal tongue display?
Imagination's utmost stretch
In wonder dies away.

Let wonder still with love unite,
And gratitude and joy;
Jesus be our supreme delight,
His praise our best employ.

O Lord, while we adoring pay
Our humble thanks to thee,
May every heart with rapture say,
"The Saviour died for me.

O may the sweet, the blissful theme,
Fill every heart and tongue;
Till all shall celebrate thy name,
And join the sacred song!

HYMN 173.

"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain."
COME let us join our cheerful songs
With angels round the throne;

Ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
But all their joys are one.

"Worthy the Lamb that died," they cry,
"To be exalted thus!"

66

Worthy the Lamb!" our lips reply,
"For he was slain for us.

3 Jesus is worthy to receive Honour and power divine;

4

And blessings more than we can give,
Be, Lord, for ever thine.

The whole creation join in one,
To bless the sacred name

Of him that sits upon

the throne,

And to adore the Lamb.

HYMN 174.

The glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

1 NOW to the Lord a noble song ! Awake, my soul; awake, my tongue; Hosanna to the eternal name,

2

3

And all his boundless love proclaim.

See where it shines in Jesus' face,
The brightest image of his grace;
God, in the person of his Son,
Has all his mightiest works outdone.

The spacious earth and spreading flood
Proclaim the wise and powerful God;
And thy rich glories from afar
Sparkle in every rolling star:

4

But in his looks a glory dwells

5

That all created light excels;
The pleasing lustre of his eyes
Outshines the wonders of the skies.

Grace, 'tis a sweet, a charming theme;
My thoughts rejoice at Jesus' name:
Ye angels, dwell upon the sound;
Ye heavens, reflect it to the ground.

O may I reach at length the place,
Where he unveils his lovely face;
Where all his beauties they behold,
And sing his name to harps of gold!

HYMN 175.

Offices of Christ.

1 JOIN all the glorious names Of wisdom, love, and power, That ever mortals knew,

2

3

4

That angels ever bore:

All are too mean to speak his worth,
Too mean to set the Saviour forth.

Great Prophet of our God,

Our tongues would bless thy name
By thee the joyful news

Of our salvation came :

The joyful news of sin forgiven,

Of hell subdued, and peace with heaven.

Jesus, our great High Priest,

Offer'd his blood and died;

Our guilty souls shall seek

No sacrifice beside:

His powerful blood did once atone,
And now it pleads before the throne.

Thou great Almighty Lord,

Our Conqueror and our King,
Thy sceptre and thy sword,

Thy reigning grace we sing
Thine is the power; O may we sit
In willing bonds beneath thy feet!

MISCELLANEOUS.

HYMN 176.

Characters of Christ.

1 GO, worship at Immanuel's feet,
See in his face what wonders meet:
Earth is too narrow to express
His worth, his glory, or his grace.

2 Is he a rock? how firm he proves!
The rock of ages never moves;
Yet the sweet streams that from him flow
Attend us all the desert through.

3 Is he a way? he leads to God,
The path is drawn in lines of blood;
There would I walk with hope and zeal,
Till I arrive at Sion's hill.

4 Is he a star? he breaks the night, Piercing the shades with dawning light; I know his glories from afar,

I know the bright, the morning-star.

5 Is he a sun? his beams are grace, His course is joy and righteousness; Nations rejoice when he appears

To chase their clouds and dry their tears.

6 0 let me climb those higher skies,
Where storms and darkness never rise!
There he displays his powers abroad,
And shines and reigns the Incarnate God.

1

HYMN 177.

Christ's intercession.

NOW let our cheerful eyes survey
Our great High Priest above;
And celebrate his constant care,
And sympathetic love.
