The following lines were written by a young American, on viewing the Statue in the Louvre, alluded to in page 57.120

Cut in white marble sits the lovely one,

Her thin veil, her soft lips, of glittering stone :-
Prest to the icy cheek one finger lies,
While the rest hide her deep, dejected eyes;
Fixt on the snowy rock, for ever there
Rest her light limbs and falls her clustering hair.
But still, when rosy evening gently gleams
Round the fair horizon in crimson streams-
Wondrous! 'tis said the statue breathes, and warm
Turns to the lovely west its living form;

Like youth and life the snowy figure glows;
The stony veil falls-the fair lips unclose;
One slender hand points distantly and slow,
Deep, sweet, and soft, these words distinctly flow!
