cheerfulness, for thou doest all things well. May we be enabled to act towards one another as the members of a family fearing thee, and in all that we have to say or do with those around us may we imitate the meekness and gentleness of him who did not strive nor cry, nor cause his voice to be heard in the streets. Help us, O Lord, to secure amid the engagements of the day some meditations which shall be toward thee, and toward the remembrance of thy name. May we roll our burden upon the Lord with confidence, and in the multitude of our thoughts within us let thy comforts delight our souls. Let mercies lead our hearts to thee, the source from whence they proceed, and let judgments check and restrain our wandering from thee.

And may we all be regarded mercifully according to our respective conditions. Let the younger members of our household set the Lord before them as their guide. Let our servants delight in the Lord and enjoy the gifts of redeeming love. Pour out of thy grace on our relatives and friends, and teach them to hope in thee. To our neighbours grant the blessings of thy salvation, and may the people of our land be instructed by the manifold means of mercy which thou bestowest. Oh for thy blessing with the good word of thy grace every where, that men may be converted. Let the people praise thee, O God, let all the people praise thee.

We thank thee for the kindness of the night and of this morning. We thank thee for life, and health, and reason, and all the blessings thou givest. Oh help us to improve them, and may we present our bodies a living sacrifice acceptable to thee, through Jesus Christ our only Mediator, to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

HEAVENLY Father, accept our thanks, that we have been preserved to-day and kept in our going out and coming in. Thou art our preserver, and we gratefully acknowledge thy care. Oh for hearts that shall not forget thee. We would mingle with our praises our humble confessions, for we have sinned against thee to-day. Father, forgive us for the Redeemer's sake. Cast us not away from thy presence, and take not thine Holy Spirit from us. We cannot plead any thing of our own, but we can urge the plea which thou hast given. Behold, O God, our shield, and look upon the face of thine Anointed. Oh that for his sake we may be reconciled to God, and may we to-night lie down to repose pardoned and at peace with thee through him. And grant us for all future life thy Spirit to preserve us from sin and to make us more entirely thine, that each of us, in the stations we respectively fill in the family, in the church, and in the world, may be more holy, more happy, and more useful. While thou makest the redemption that is in Christ Jesus ours, help us, O Lord, to imbibe his spirit, and to tread in his footsteps. For us to live may it be Christ, that to die may be gain.

Accept our thanks for the comforts of our home; that we have food convenient for us, that we have raiment to wear, and a bed to rest upon. Many are denied the comforts given to us, and we are not more deserving than they. Bless the Lord, O our souls, and

forget not all his benefits. Let thy goodness to us make us thoughtful of others who may be in need, and may we readily minister to their necessities according to our opportunities and our means. May the love of Christ constrain us to do good unto all men, especially unto those who are of the household of faith. We ask thy continued protection through the night. Thou never slumberest nor sleepest. Save us from harm, from the sons of violence, from sudden disease, and from death. Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which might happen to the body, and from evil thoughts and injurious dreams, and all that would assault and hurt the soul. The close of this day reminds us of the approaching close of our mortal life. Prepare us for that solemn time. We know not when it may come. It may be near now, even at hand, but we would not be concerned. Oh that we may ever be ready when the Lord shall call, to enter upon our eternal rest with the same composure with which we commit ourselves now to the refreshing slumbers of this night.

Grant to our friends and relations thy saving mercy; and if we have enemies, forgive and sanctify them. Let thy church triumph in the earth. Comfort the afflicted; succour the tempted; and pour consolation into the mourner's heart. Let thy saints, O Lord, rejoice in goodness, and let sinners be converted unto thee.

Accept us and our worship, and grant us the things which are needful for us, for the sake of Jesus Christ, thy dear Son, and our only Saviour. Amen.

ACTS XXVII.

MORNING HYMN.

“To this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived.”

WE sing his love, who once was slain,
Who soon o'er death revived again,
That all his saints through him might have
Eternal conquests o'er the grave.

Soon shall the trumpet sound, and we
Shall rise to immortality.

The saints who now in Jesus sleep,
His own almighty power shall keep,
Till dawns the bright illustrious day,
When death itself shall die away.
Soon, &c.

How loud shall our glad voices sing,
When Christ his risen saints shall bring

From beds of dust and silent clay,

To realms of everlasting day.

Soon, &c.

When Jesus we in glory meet,

Our utmost joys shall be complete ;
When landed on that heavenly shore,
Death and the curse shall be no more.
Soon, &c.

ACTS XXVIII.

EVENING HYMN.

"Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare."

OH, give thanks to him who made
Morning light and evening shade ;
Source and giver of all good,
Nightly sleep, and daily food;
Quickener of our wearied powers,
Guard of our unconscious hours.

Oh, give thanks to nature's King,
Who made every breathing thing;
His, our warm and sentient frame,
His, the mind's immortal flame.
Oh how close the ties that bind
Spirits to the Eternal Mind!

Oh, give thanks with heart and lip,
For we are his workmanship;
And all creatures are his care-
Not a bird that cleaves the air
Falls unnoticed; but who can
Speak the love of God to man?
Oh, give thanks to him who came
In a mortal suffering frame;
Temple of the Deity-

Came for rebel man to die :
In the path himself hath trod,
Leading back his saints to God.
