INTRODUCTION.

In the beginning of the year 1858, THOMAS ROCHESTER, Esq., of Whalton, by advertisement in the local newspapers, announced that prizes to the amount of £100 would be given for the besi Five Essays on “Man's Duty to God," to be Written by Working Men or Women, residing in the County of Northumberland. For these prizes there were fiftyfour competitors; and the successful Essays were published in the course of the same year.

At the commencement of the present year (1859), the same gentleman offered prizes to the same amount for the best Essays on “ Man's Duty to his Neighbour," to be Written by Members of the same Class. For these prizes there were fifty-six competitors, and the Eleven Essays comprised in the present volume are those to which the adjudicators awarded the prizes.
