Death, the last foe, was captive led,
And heav'n with praise and wonder rang. 3 Him, the first fruits, his chosen sons
Shall follow from the vanquish'd grave;
His church to quicken, and to save.
And shine in everlasting day.
From the cold tomb the slumb’rers spring; Thro' heav'n with joy their myriads rise, And hail their Saviour and their King.
PSALM 88. Fourth Part. C. M.
A be’iever walking long in darkness. ? La Thy grace prevail'd, and made me thine ;
ORD, in a day of pow'r divine
And trusted in thy pow'r to save.
Which, then I thought, would never cease ? If I am thine, how can it be,
That comforts should for ever flee? 3 Involv'd in glooms of darkest night,
And banish'd from thy blissful sight,
But still the glooms of night abide.
Afflictions all my peace destroy ;
And sorrows rise beyond control.
Restore my peace, assuage my grief;
And let, of future rest, an heir,
The covenant made with Christ.
The truth and mercy of the Lord;
Like heav'n establish'd by his hand.
"With thee my cov'nant first was made ; “In thee shall dying sinners live;
"Glory and grace are thine to give.
Jesus her Saviour, and her King :
The faithfulness of God.
The mercies of the Lord :
How faithful is his word.
Shall firm as heav'n endure;
Th' eternal grace is sure.
The promis'd Jewish throne !
To David's greater Son.
4 His seed for ever shall possess
A throne above the skies;
Shall to that glory rise. 5 Lord God of hosts, thy wond'rous ways
Are sung by saints above;
The power and majesty of God. 1 ITH rey’rence let thy saints appear,
And bow before the Lord ;
And tremble at his word. 2 How terrible thy glories be!
How bright thine armies shine! Where is the pow'r that vies with thee?
Or truth compar'd with thine ?
On thy supporting hand ;
Move round at thy command.
And rule the boist'rous deep:
The rolling billows sleep. 5 Heav'n, earth, and air, and sea are thine,
And the dark world of hell;
When Egypt durst rebel !
Yet wondrous is thy grace ;
Invite us near thy face.
PSALM 89. Fourth Part. C. M.
A blessed Gospel. 1 BLEST are the souls that hear and know
The gospel's joyful sound; Peace shall attend the path they go,
And light their steps surround. 2 Their joy shall bear their spirits up
Thro' their Redeemer's name; His righteousness exalts their hope,
Nor Satan dares condemn.
Strength and salvation gives;
Christ's mediatorial Kingdom.
known; Sinners, behold, your help iš laid
“On my almighty Son."
My people's better King;
And still new subjects bring.
With mercy by his side ;
He shall in triumph ride.
My promises are strong ;
His seed endure as long.
PSALM 89. Sixth Part. C.M.
The covenant of grace unchangeable.
The children of my Son,
down ; 2 Their sins I'll visit with the rod,
And make their folly smart;
Nor from my truth depart.
But keep my grace in mind;
Eternal truth shall bind.
And pledg'd my holiness,
To David and his race,
And spread from sea to sea, Long as he travels round the skies
To give the nations day.
His kingdom shall endure ;
Mortality and hope. A funeral psalm. 1
, our How frail our life, how short the date ! Where is the man that draws his breath
Safe from disease, secure from death? 2 Lord, while we see whole nations die,
Our flesh and sense repine, and cry,
