PREFACE

THIS little treatise is so often called for, both by individuals and by societies, that it is again offered to the public in its original form. Nothing the author ever wrote has been so universally popular. Twenty thousand were published early in its life; and years afterwards, Mr. Mann was repeatedly invited, in regions of country where people were said by the lyceum agents not to be in the habit of reading much, to read it to large audiences. Upon such occasions, he always took a fresh lecture with him, but this was preferred in many such places, especially at the West. Its definite and compact form gave it a specific significance.

CAMBRIDGE, Dec. 1870.
