4 Send some message from thy word, That may joy and peace afford; Let thy Spirit now impart,

Full salvation to each heart.

5 Comfort those who weep and mourn, Let the time of joy return;

Those that are cast down lift up;
Make them strong in faith and hope.
6 Grant that all may seek and find,
Thee a gracious God, and kind;
Heal the sick, the captive free;
Let us all rejoice in thee.

HYMN 154. L. M. [74]

JESUS, from whom all blessings flow,
Great builder of thy church below;
If now thy Spirit moves my breast,
Hear and fulfil thine own request.
2 The few that truly call thee Lord,
And wait thy sanctifying word;
And thee their utmost Saviour own,
Unite and perfect them in one.

3 0 let them all thy mind express,
Stand forth thy chosen witnesses;
Thy power unto salvation show,
And perfect holiness below.

4 In them let all mankind behold,
How Christians liv'd in days of old;
Mighty their envious foes to move,
A proverb of reproach-and love.

HYMN 155. C. M.

JESUS, the all-restoring Word,
My fallen spirit's hope,

After thy lovely likeness, Lord,
Ah, when shall I wake up?

2 Thou, O my God, thou only art
The Life, the Truth, the Way;
Quicken my soul, instruct my heart,
My sinking footsteps stay.

3 Of all thou hast in earth below,
In heaven above to give,

Give me thine only love to know,
In thee to walk and live.

4 Fill me with all the life of love;
In mystic union join

Me to thyself, and let me prove
The fellowship divine.

5 Open the intercourse between
My longing soul and thee;
Never to be broke off again
To all eternity.

HYMN 156. L. M. [75]

MY hope, my all, my Saviour thou,
To thee, lo, now my soul I bow;
I feel the bliss thy wounds impart,
I find thee, Saviour, in my heart.

2 Be thou my strength, be thou my way,
Protect me through my life's short day;
In all my acts may wisdom guide,
And keep me, Saviour, near thy side.
3 Correct, reprove and comfort me:
As I have need, my Saviour be;
And if I would from thee depart,
Then clasp, me, Saviour to thy heart.
4 In fierce temptation's darkest hour,
Save me from sin and Satan's power;
Tear every idol from thy throne,
And reign, my Saviour, reign alone,

5*

5 My suff'ring time shall soon be o'er,
Then shall I sigh and weep no more ;
My ransom'd soul shall soar away,
To sing thy praise in endless day.

HYMN 157. L. M.

WHOM man forsakes thou wilt not leave,
Ready the outcasts to receive:
Though all my simpleness I own,
And all my faults to thee are known.
2 Ah! wherefore did I ever doubt ?
Thou wilt in no wise cast me out,
A helpless soul that comes to thee,
With only sin and misery.

3 Lord, I am sick, my sickness cure;
I want, do thou enrich the poor:
Under thy mighty hand I stoop;
O lift the abject sinner up!

4 Lord, I am blind, be thou my sight;
Lord, I weak, be thou my might;
A helper of the helpless be,
And let me find my all in thee!

HYMN 158. C. M.

JESUS, Redeemer of mankind,
Display thy saving power:
Thy mercy let these outcasts find,
And know their gracious hour.

2 O wouldst thou cast a pitying look,
All goodness as thou art,

Like that which faithless Peter's broke,
On each obdurate heart!

3 Who thee beneath their feet have trod, And crucified afresh,

Touch with thine all-victorious blood,
And turn the stone to flesh.

4 Open their eyes thy cross to see,
Their ears to hear thy cries:
Sinner, thy Saviour weeps for thee,
For thee he weeps and dies.

5 All the day long he meekly stands,
His rebels to receive;

And shows his wounds, and spreads his hands, And bids you turn and live.

HYMN 159. C. M. [78]

COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning powersTM;
Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 Look how we grovel here below,
Fond of these earthly toys;
Our souls, how heavily they go,
To reach eternal joys!

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Father, and shall we ever live,
At this poor dying rate?
Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great?

5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning powers;
Come shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN 160. C. M.

ALL glory to the dying Lamb,
And never-ceasing praise;
While angels live to know thy name,
Or men to feel thy grace!

2 With this cold, stony heart of mine,
Jesus, to thee, I flee;

And to thy grace my soul resign,
To be renew'd by thee.

3 Give me to hide my blushing face,
While thy dear cross appears;
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt mine eyes to tears.
4 O may the uncorrupted Seed,
Abide and reign within;
And thy life-giving word forbid
My new-born soul to sin.

5 Father, I wait before thy throne;
Call me a child of thine:

Send down the Spirit of thy Son,
To form my heart divine.

6 There shed thy promis'd love abroad,
And make my comfort strong;
Then shall I say, "My Father God!"
With an unwav'ring tongue.

HYMN 161. C. M.

FATHER, I stretch my hands to thee,
No other help I know;
If thou withdraw thyself from me,
Ah, whither shall I go?

2 What did thine only Son endure,
Before I drew my breath!
What pain, what labor, to secure
My soul from endless death!

3 O Jesus, could I this believe,

I now should feel thy power;

Now my poor soul thou wouldst retrieve, Nor let me wait one hour.
