To the Legislature of the State of Michigan:

In compliance with the law, the Board of Internal Improvement would respectfully report for the fiscal year 1849.

The only work under the charge of the board, is the expenditure of the appropriation for improving the navigation of the St. Joseph river. During the last fiscal year, there has been expended on this work, $3,272 92, under the superintendence of John F. Porter, Esq. This amount has been expended on the river between Niles and Three Rivers, in removing fallen timber, sand bars, and other ob structions to the navigation, and has no doubt been of some benefit to those engaged in transporting property on this river. Quite a large amount of produce finds its way to market through this channel of conveyance, and must continue to do so until some better and cheaper mode of transportation is offered by railroads or otherwise. There remains $3,679 36 of the appropriation yet unexpended. GEO. B. COOPER,

Ch'n. Board of Int. Imp't.
