In the portion of Scripture now before us, we find St.
Paul giving thanks for the grace which had been vouch-
safed to the Corinthians, and the rich gifts which it had
pleased God to bestow upon them. But he ascribes none
of the glory or praise of these attainments to themselves.
It is his God only whom he thanks that they were so dis-
tinguished; and it is to the same God alone, by His Son
Jesus, that he looks for their continuance in this state of
grace : for, unless Jesus should confirm them unto the
end, he knew they could not be found blameless in the
day of His coming.

From these few verses, we may draw much important

instruction. And first, let us learn to look to God alone,
