HYMNS

OF

PRAYER AND PRAISE.

1

NEW every morning is the love
Our wakening and uprising prove;
Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life, and power, and thought.

New mercies each returning day
Hover around us while we pray;
New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

If on our daily course our mind

Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still of countless price
God will provide for sacrifice.

The trivial round, the common task,
Would furnish all we ought to ask;
Room to deny ourselves; a road
To bring us daily nearer God.

Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love
Fit us for perfect Rest above;
And help us this and every day
To live more nearly as we pray.—Amen.

2

LORD of the Light! this day our Guardian be,
From Earth's dark thoughts let us arise with
Thee;

Thy Spirit give to lull our hearts to peace,
Fill them with hope, their feeble faith increase.
We can but pray as our frail wills suggest,
Lord, do Thou grant, as to Thy love seems best;
We can but praise in accents poor and weak,
Do Thou accept what Thankfulness should
speak.

Oh! let Thy Hand protect us day by day;
Thy Steps our track upon the heavenward way;
Thy Word the Lamp our faltering feet to guide;
Thy Will our will, whatever may betide.

Should Grief o'ercast, and Gain be turn'd to Loss,
Teach Thou our hearts to linger round Thy Cross;
Let our weak love grow strong from gazing there,
And in Thy Sorrow see our Balm of Care!

And when this brief Life's busy task is done, The good fight finished, and the Victory won, May we in Christ's own Righteousness be drest, All labour ended; evermore at Rest.—Amen.

3

LORD, Thy children guide and keep,
As with feeble steps they press
On the pathway rough and steep
Through this weary wilderness.
Holy Jesu, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.

There are stony ways to tread ;Give the strength we sorely lack: There are tangled paths to thread ;Light us, lest we miss the track. Holy Jesu, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.

There are sandy wastes that lie
Cold and sunless, vast and drear,
Where the feeble faint and die ;—
Grant us grace to persevere.
Holy Jesu, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.

Upward still to purer heights,
Onward yet to scenes more blest,
Calmer regions, clearer lights,
Till we reach the promised Rest.
Holy Jesu, day by day

Lead us in the narrow way.-Amen.

4

O LORD, the uncreated Light,
Direct me in my way,

That I may live as in Thy sight,
And Thy blest will obey.

No sinful word, nor deed of wrong,
Nor thoughts that idly rove,
But simple truth be on my tongue,
And in my heart be love!

As Life's swift hours in order flow,
Be Thou my sure defence;

Protect me from my every foe
Of Satan and of Sense.

Oh! grant that to Thine honour, Loru,

My daily toil may tend;

That I begin it at Thy Word,

And in Thy favour end!-Amen.

5

O DAY of rest and gladness, O Day of joy and light, [bright; O balm of care and sadness, most beautiful, most On Thee, the high and lowly, as age on age may run, Sing Holy, Holy, Holy, to the Great Three in One.

On Thee, at the Creation, the Light first had its birth; [depths of Earth;

On Thee, for our salvation, Christ rose from On Thee, our Lord victorious, the Spirit sent from Heaven;

And thus on Thee, most glorious, a triple light was given.

To-day, on weary nations, the heavenly Manna falls; To holy Convocations the silver trumpet calls: The Christian's sweet refection on Christ's unfolded Love;

A day of resurrection from Earth to things above.

come;

This is his holy ladder, where Angels go and [Heaven his Home; Each Sunday makes him gladder, and nearer New graces ever gaining, from this our Day of Rest,

Be ours the Rest remaining to Spirits of the blest!-Amen.
