OME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart; Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love.
Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight; Anoint and cheer our soilèd face With the abundance of Thy grace : Keep far our foes, give peace at home; Where Thou art Guide no ill can come.
Teach us to know the Father, Son, And Thee, of both, to be but One ; That through the ages all along This may be our endless song : Praise to Thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
VENI, Sancte Spiritus,
Et emitte caelitus Lucis Tuae radium. Veni, Pater pauperum, Veni, Dator munerum, Veni, Lumen cordium ; Consolator optime, Dulcis Hospes animae, Dulce Refrigerium : In labore Requies, In aestu Temperies, In fletu Solatium. O Lux beatissima, Reple cordis intima Tuorum fidelium. Sine Tuo numine Nihil est in homine, Nihil est innoxium. Lava quod est sordidum, Riga quod est aridum, Sana quod est saucium : Flecte quod est rigidum, Fove quod est frigidum, Rege quod est devium. Da Tuis fidelibus In Te confidentibus Sacrum Septenarium ; Da virtutis meritum, Da salutis exitum, Da perenne gaudium.
125 WHEN God of old came down from heaven
In power and wrath He came; Before His feet the clouds were riven,
Half darkness and half flame.
But when He came the second time, He came in
power
and love; Softer than gale at morning prime
Hovered His holy Dove. The fires that rushed on Sinai down
In sudden torrents dread, Now gently light, a glorious crown, On
every sainted head. And as on Israel's awe-struck ear
The voice exceeding loud, The trump, that angels quake to hear,
Thrilled from the deep dark cloud ; So, when the Spirit of our God
Came down His flock to find, A voice from heaven was heard abroad,
A rushing, mighty wind. It fills the Church of God, It fills
The sinful world around; Only in stubborn hearts and wills
No place for It is found. Come, Lord, come, Wisdom, Love, and Power,
Open our ears to hear ; Let us not miss the accepted hour;
Save, Lord, by love or fear.
126 OME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,
and Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide ; O’er every thought and step preside, The light of truth to us display, And make us know and choose Thy way ; Plant holy fear in every heart, That we from God may ne'er depart.
Lead us to holiness—the road That we must take to dwell with God; Lead us to Christ, the living Way, Nor let us from His precepts stray. Lead us to God, our final Rest, To be with Him for ever blest ; Lead us to heaven, its bliss to share, Fulness of joy for ever there.
127 WE
E thank Thee, Lord, for this fair earth,
The glittering sky, the silver sea, For all their beauty, all their worth,
Their light and glory, come from Thee. Thanks for the flowers that clothe the ground,
The trees that wave their arms above, The hills that gird our dwellings round,
As Thou dost gird Thine own with love. Yet teach us still how far more fair,
More glorious, Father, in Thy sight, Is one puré deed, one holy prayer,
One heart that holds Thy Spirit's might. So while we gaze, with thoughtful eye,
On all the gifts Thy love has given, Help us in Thee to live and die,
By Thee to rise from earth to heaven.
