Crown Him the Son of God
Before the worlds began;

And ye, who tread where He hath trod,
Crown Him the Son of Man:

Who every grief hath known That wrings the human breast, And takes and bears them for His own, That all in Him may rest.

Crown Him the Lord of Light,

Who, on a darkened world,

In robes of glory infinite,

His fiery flag unfurled;
And bore it raised on high,
In heaven, on earth, beneath,
To all the sign of victory
O'er Satan, sin, and death.

Crown Him the Lord of Life,
Who triumphed o'er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save.
His glories now we sing,
Who died and rose on high,
Who died, eternal life to bring,
And lives, that death may die.

E is gone-beyond the skies,
A cloud receives Him from our eyes;
Gone beyond the highest height
Of mortal gaze or angels' flight;
Through the veil of time and space
Passed into the holiest place;
All the toil, the sorrow done,
All the battle fought and won.

He is gone and we remain
In this world of sin and pain;
In the void which He has left,
On this earth of Him bereft,
We have still His work to do,
We can still His path pursue,
Seek Him both in friend and foe,
In ourselves His image show.

He is gone-we heard Him say,
'Good that I should go away.'
Gone is that dear form and face,
But not gone His present grace ;
Though Himself no more we see,
Comfortless we cannot be :

No! His Spirit still is ours,

Quickening, freshening all our powers.

He is gone-towards their goal
World and Church must onward roll;
Far behind we leave the past,
Forwards are our glances cast :
Still His words before us range
Through the ages, as they change:
Wheresoe'er the truth shall lead,
He will give whate'er we need.

He is gone-but we once more
Shall behold Him as before;
In the heaven of heavens the same
As on earth He went and came.
In the many mansions there
Place for us will He prepare :
In that world, unseen, unknown,
He and we may yet be one.

He is gone-but, not in vain,
Wait, until He comes again;
He is risen, He is not here,
Far above this earthly sphere:
Evermore in heart and mind,
Where our peace in Him we find,
To our own Eternal Friend
Thitherward let us ascend.

W!

E saw Thee not when Thou didst come
To this poor world of sin and death,
Nor e'er beheld Thy cottage-home

In that despised Nazareth ;
But we believe Thy footsteps trod
Its streets and plains, Thou Son of God.

We did not see Thee lifted high
Amid that wild and savage crew,
Nor heard Thy meek, imploring cry,

'Forgive, they know not what they do;'
Yet we believe the deed was done,
Which shook the earth and veiled the sun.

We stood not by the empty tomb
Where late Thy sacred body lay,
Nor sat within that upper room,

Nor met Thee in the open way;

But we believe that angels said,
'Why seek the living with the dead?'

We did not mark the chosen few

When Thou didst through the clouds ascend,
First lift to heaven their wondering view,
Then to the earth all prostrate bend;

Yet we believe that mortal eyes
Beheld that journey to the skies.

Ο

UR Blest Redeemer, ere He breathed
His tender, last farewell,

A Guide, a Comforter, bequeathed
With us to dwell.

He came sweet influence to impart,
A gracious, willing Guest,

While He can find one humble heart,
Wherein to rest.

And His that gentle voice we hear,
Soft as the breath of even,

That checks each thought, that calms each fear,
And speaks of heaven.

And every virtue we possess,

And every conquest won, And every thought of holiness Are His alone.

Spirit of purity and grace,

Our weakness pitying see:

Oh! make our hearts Thy dwelling-place,
And worthier Thee.

Oh! praise the Father; praise the Son;
Blest Spirit, praise to Thee!

All praise to God, the Three in One,
The One in Three!
