John xvi. 33.

THESE THINGS I HAVE SPOKEN UNTO YOU,
THAT IN ME YE MIGHT HAVE PEACE. IN
THE WORLD YE SHALL HAVE TRIBULATION:

BUT BE OF GOOD CHEER; I HAVE OVERCOME

THE WORLD.

THE portions of our Saviour's last long discourse with His disciples, which have been selected as the Gospels for the two preceding Sundays, and for this day, are extremely interesting. What He said at this time must have proved exceedingly encouraging to their minds. It was calculated to sustain them under the privation which they were about to endure; and to bring the greatest consolation to them, when they afterwards reflected on it.

In the Gospel for this day, our Lord Jesus Christ leads His disciples particularly to the contemplation of the God of heaven as their Father; whom they might approach with confidence in His own all-prevailing name, to supplicate that paternal care and protection which they should need to enable them to fulfil the duties of the station in which they would be placed as His apostles. On this account He solemnly assured them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. He had said to them before, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.' He now showed them how they might enjoy continual access into the Divine presence; and might be assured that their humble supplications to the Father of heaven would be accepted; and that He would give them those good things which they asked at His hands; even through His own mediation and intercession, as the beloved Son of God. This is recorded for our instruction, that we may see the way to be open for us also to draw nigh unto God, through Jesus Christ; and making use of it, may obtain those blessings from our heavenly Father which we need. Our blessed Lord had before given directions to His disciples with regard to what they might ask from their heavenly Father; when
