I

WAS glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together: whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord. For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good.

-PSALM 122.

WILL offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people, in the courts of the Lord's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the Lord. Ps. 116:17-19.

God of our fathers, we thank Thee for bringing us safely through another week and we await with joy the day of rest and holy convocation. Thou knowest the need of rest from toil and we thank Thee that from the beginning Thou didst ordain a day of rest that comes to weary toilers like spring after winter, peace after war, light after darkness. As citizens and as Christians, may we love Thy day and seek to preserve it for ourselves and for the generations yet to be. O King of kings, hear our prayer for our Chief Magistrate, for the members of his Cabinet and for Congress, that in these days of perplexity and storm they may be guided by Thy Spirit to do the things that are just and right. We beseech Thee for Thy blessing upon our country, its commerce, agriculture, schools, colleges, homes, and churches. May Thy holy will be the law of our lives and under the guidance of Thy Spirit may we assist in the building up of Thy Kingdom among men. Hear us as we pray for Thy blessing upon our household in the name of Jesus Christ, Thy Son. Amen.

-DAVID G. WYLIE, D. D.

T

HE Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfill all thy counsel. We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfill all thy petitions. Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Save, Lord: let the king hear us when we call.

-PSALM 20.

Another day hast Thou granted unto us, gracious
Father, wherein we are privileged to live and labor,
love and pray.
We thank Thee for the renewed evi-
dence of Thy daily love and patience. As the day, so
may our strength be. Help us to sanctify the hours by
the performance of all duties, great or small, the
Christlike acquittal of our responsibilities with God
and man, and the divine experience of Thy approval.
Bless our home, our church, our city, our state, our
land, and all the nations of the earth. Bless all who
love Thy Kingdom and serve Thee within its borders
throughout the world, and may the coming of nightfall
see Thy will done in many seen and unseen places.
Preserve precious lives. Strengthen brave souls. Give
ear to the petition of the true-hearted. Succor the
weak. Heal the sick. Grant Thy peace to all who pass
within the veil. We commend to Thee and to Thy
guidance the President of our country and those associ-
Iated with him in the direction of affairs of state. Be
nigh unto our soldiers and sailors and all who command
them, and in Thy good time give victory and peace.
All we ask is for Christ's sake. Amen.

-HENRY M. MELLEN, D. D.

BELOVED, let us love one another: for love is of God;

and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. -I JOHN 4:7-18.

us.

O God and Father, from the reading of Thy Holy Word and listening to Thy voice as Thou dost speak to us, we would turn to commune with Thee in prayer. Fill us with a sense of thanksgiving, because we are Thy children and because of the many blessings which Thou dost constantly bestow upon us. We pray Thee to call anew to our minds this day. the joy of living, the joy of friendship, the joy of home, the joy of service. May we never be so busy with the mere performance of work and duty as to miss the reward of seeing the inner significance and happiness in what we do. Forgive us for our past thoughtlessness and help us, we beseech Thee, to have "the mind that was in Christ and to go about doing good. And thus, O Father, as faithful sons and daughters of Thine, may we be colaborers with Thee forever in Thy Kingdom. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

-REV. GEORGE E. BEVANS.

YEA,

EA, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: to deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things. -PROV. 2:3-12.

O God, we thank Thee for all Thy gracious blessings in the past, and for those that shall yet be unto us and unto our children. We confess, with shame and sorrow, the sins that must have grieved Thee. How often we have said the words of prayer for the coming of Thy Kingdom but have failed to show the spirit of brotherhood that is its life. We have even turned to Thy Word when we have not really desired to learn Thy will, for our feet are slow in the path of obedience. Forgive us, our Father, and love us still. O Thou who givest songs in the night, comfort all who may be in trouble or sorrow, and make of us better instruments to sound Thy praise. Now, as the day calls us to unselfish devotion to our appointed tasks, waken us to a true sense of the companionship of Christ, give us dauntless hearts to follow where He leads, and may the day thus begun and continued with Him, be crowned with everlasting life. This we ask in the name of our Saviour Lord. Amen.

-CHARLES G. RICHARDS, D. D.

BUT the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence, -JOHN 14:26-31.

Gracious Lord, we have known Thee by many names. We have called Thee our Creator, our Protector, our King, our Father in Heaven. But we are glad that we know Thee also as our Saviour. In Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Thou hast sought us and found us and saved us. In His precious blood Thou hast washed our sins away. To His keeping power Thou hast committed our souls. We look into His face and we see Thee there, and there we understand Thy love. O God, help us to take the gospel as it is in Christ to the sinful, the anxious, the broken-hearted. He is sufficient for us. He will be sufficient for them. Lay upon Thy servants a new sense of the supreme value of souls; make us once more sure that only spiritual values abide. As we profess the name of Jesus Christ convince us deeply of His expectations for us. Show us our great opportunity. We ask it in Jesus' Name. Amen.
