6 Elders, and saints, and angels, join In work so wond'rous and divine; Their glories at thy footstool lay,

And praise thee through an endless day.

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

10 TELL me no more of earthly vain store;

The time for such trifles, thro' mercy, is o'er. 2 A Canaan I've found, where true joys abound, "Tis heavenly dwelling on that happy ground. 3 The souls that believe, in Paradise live, And me in that number may Jesus receive. 4 No mortal doth know what he can bestow, What life, love, and comfort,-go after him, go. 5 Ah! do not delay, Christ calls thee away: Rise, follow thy Saviour, and bless the glad day. 6 And when I shall die, "Receive me," I'll cry; For Jesus hath lov'd me, I cannot say why. 7 But this I do find, we two are so join'd, He'll not live in glory, and leave me behind.

8 And now I'm in care, my neighbours may share These blessings: To seek them, will none of you dare? 9 In bondage, O why, and death will you lie, When Jesus assures you free grace is so nigh?

THE HOLY SPIRIT.

496. The Witnessing and Sealing Spirit.

Eph. i. 13, 14. (C. M.)

1 WHY

HY should the children of a King,
Go mourning all their days?

Great Comforter! descend, and bring
Some tokens of thy grace.

2 Dost thou not dwell in all the saints,
And seal the heirs of heav'n?
When wilt thou banish my complaints,
And show my sins forgiv'n?

3 Assure my conscience of her part,
In the Redeemer's blood;

And bear thy witness with my heart,
That I am born of God.

4 Thou art the earnest of his love,
The pledge of joys to come;
And thy soft wings, celestial Dove,
Will safe convey me home.

497. Breathing after the Holy Spirit. (C. M.)

[ocr errors]

OME, Holy Spirit, Heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning pow'rs,

Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 Look, how we grovel here below,
Fond of these trifling toys;
Our souls can neither fly nor go
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Dear Lord! and shall we ever live
At this poor dying rate?

Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great?

5 Come, Holy Spirit, Heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning pow'rs,
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

498. The Operations of the Holy Spirit.
1 ETERNAL Spirit! we confess,

And sing the wonders of thy grace;
Thy pow'r conveys our blessings down,
From God the Father and the Son.

2 Enlighten'd by thine heav'nly ray,
Our shades and darkness turn to day;
Thine inward teachings make us know,
Our danger, and our refuge too.

3 Thy pow'r and glory work within,
And break the chains of reigning sin;
Doth our imperious lusts subdue,
And form our wretched hearts anew.

4 The troubled conscience knows thy voice;
Thy cheering words awake our joys:
Thy words allay the stormy wind,
And calm the surges of the mind.

499. Effects of Divine Grace. (P.M.) WHEN, with my mind devoutly prest,

1

Dear Saviour, my revolving breast
Would past offences trace;
Trembling, I make the black review,
Yet pleas'd behold, admiring too,
The power of changing grace.

2 This tongue, with blasphemies defil'd,
These feet, to erring paths beguil'd,
In heavenly league agree:

Who could believe such lips could praise,
Or think my dark and winding ways
Should ever lead to thee?

3 These eyes, that once abus'd their sight,
Now lift to thee their watery light,
And weep a silent flood;

These hands ascend in ceaseless prayer,-
O wash away the stains they wear,
In thy redeeming blood!

4 These ears, that pleas'd could entertain
The midnight oath, the lustful strain,
When round the festal board;
Now, deaf to all th' enchanting noise,
Avoid the throng, detest the joys,
And press to hear thy word.

5 Thus art thou serv'd in every part;
O would'st thou more transform my heart,
This drossy thing refine;

That grace might nature's strength controul,
And a new creature, body, soul,
Be, Lord, for ever thine!

500.

Longing for Heaven. (L. M.)

1 A Toiling, I cry,

T anchor laid, remote from home,

Toiling, I cry, "Sweet Spirit, come!

"Celestial breeze, no longer stay,

"But swell my sails, and speed my way. 2" Fain would I mount, fain would I glow, "And loose my cable from below;

"But I can only spread my sail;

"Thou, thou must breathe th' auspicious gale!"

501. The Leadings of the Holy Spirit. (L. M.)

COM

YOME Holy Spirit, source of love, With light and comfort from above; Be thou our guardian, thou our guide, O'er every thought and step preside. 2 Conduct us safe, conduct us far From every sin and hurtful snare; Lead to thy word that rules must give, And teach us lessons how to live. 3 The light of truth to us display, And make us know and choose thy way; Plant holy fear in ev'ry heart,

That we from God may ne'er depart.

4 Lead us to holiness, the road,

That we must take to dwell with God;
Lead us to Christ, the living way,
Nor let us from his pastures stray.

5 Lead us to God our final rest,
In his enjoyment to be blest ;
Lead us to heav'n, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.

COM

To the Holy Spirit. (L. M.)

OME, Holy Spirit, calm my mind,
And fit me to approach my God;
Remove each vain, each worldly thought,
And lead me to thy blest abode.

2 Hast thou imparted to my soul,
A living spark of heav'nly fire?
O kindle now the sacred flame,
Make me to burn with

pure desire.
