THE

THE Publisher of "THE BOMBAY ALMANACK AND BOOK OF DIRECTION" for 1858 trusts that it will be found to have maintained that progress in improvement which it has for some years past displayed. All possible care and pains have been taken to keep up the high reputation which the publication has won for itself.

The ordinary English matter has been extended, and much relating to new subjects has been introduced. The same may be said with regard to the information derived from the official "East Indian Accounts."

An useful addition is a complete Code of Furlough and Absentee Rules, Civil, Uncovenanted, Military, and Naval,―never before issued in a collected form,-with alterations and explanations appended to the particular Rules to which they refer, the whole brought down to a late date.

The List of Inhabitants has again been extended and carefully revised.

It has been found impossible to introduce the Bengal Army List as usual, for the sufficient reason that the complete disorganisation of the Bengal Army has prevented the publication of the lists issued at Calcutta.

It should be observed that the figures in the special Index to the Bombay Army List (pages 367-375) refer to those at the foot of the pages, those at the head being a continuation of the paging of the Almanack itself.

As usual, the BOMBAY ALMANACK" may claim the recommendation of punctual and early appearance, being issued before the commencement of the year to which it relates.
