more than confirmed by the volume before us, which we like even better than its predecessor. Mr. Hulbert, though well read, and fully conversant with the works already written on the subject of which he treats, does not merely confine himself to selecting the best and most authentic facts, he possesses too much good sense and independence to move entirely in the trammels of others; and hence we find him blending his accounts with remarks, acute, ingenious, and often profound." In Reviewing Volume the Third, in No. 248, it is observed: "The MUSEUM AMERICANUM forms the third division of Mr. Hulbert's very excellent little Work, The Select Museum of Nature and Art. Of the preceding volumes, which related to Africa and Asia, we have already spoken in terms of strong, but well merited praise; which we can find no reason to retract, on seeing the present volume. If Mr. Hulbert were a mere compiler, industry and a good taste would be the only merit he could claim, but this is by no means the case; for the Select Museum abounds with many original articles, either by the editor, or contributions to him by persons who, fre personal investigation, are enabled to afford valuable information on the subject on which he treats." Equally favourable opinions have been expressed by other Journalists, to which might have been added the written testimonies of nearly fifty highly respectable individuals, residing in different parts of the kingdom, and abroad.
