HYMN LXI. Christ's Passion. 1 THE morning dawns upon the place 2 Last eve, by those He call'd His own, He met His enemies alone In all their malice, rage, and pride. 3 Brought forth to judgment, now He stands Arraign'd, condemn'd, at Pilate's bar; Here, spurn'd by fierce prætorian bands, There, mock'd by Herod's men of war. 4 He bears their buffeting and scorn, Mock-homage of the lip and knee, The purple robe, the crown of thorn, The scourge, the nail, the accursed trec. 5 No guile within His mouth is found, He neither threatens nor complains; Meek as a lamb for slaughter bound, Dumb 'midst His murderers He remains. 6 But hark! He prays,-'tis for His foes; He speaks, 'tis comfort to His friends; Answers, and Paradise bestows; He bows His head; the conflict ends. 7 Truly this was the Son of GOD! Though in a servant's mean disguise; And, bruised beneath the Father's rod, Not for Himself -for Man He dies. HYMN LXII. What is Prayer? 1 PRAYER is the soul's sincere desire, Utter'd or unexpress'd, The motion of a hidden fire That trembles in the breast. 2 Prayer is the burthen of a sigh, The upward glancing of an eye, 3 Prayer is the simplest form of speech That infant-lips can try, Prayer the sublimest strains that reach 4 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice While angels in their songs rejoice, 5 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath, The Christian's native air, His watchword at the gates of death; 6 The saints in prayer appear as one 7 Nor prayer is made by man alone, And JESUS, on the eternal throne, 8 O Thou by whom we come to GOD, The path of prayer Thyself hast trod; HYMN LXIII. The Lord's Prayer.—I. 1 OUR heavenly Father! hear our prayer; 3 Now, and for ever, unto Thee, HYMN LXIV. Wants and Wishes in Prayer. 1 WHAT shall we ask of GOD in prayer? Whatever man may seek to share, 2 Father of all our mercies, Thou 3 When, bound with sins and trespasses, 4 When, harass'd by ten thousand foes, 5 When dire temptations gather round, And threaten or allure, By storm or calm, in Thee be found 6 When age advances, may we grow To holiness above. 7 When earthly joys and cares depart, Desire and envy cease, Be Thou the portion of our heart, 8 When flames these elements destroy, HYMN LXV. The Preparation of the Heart. 1 LORD, teach us how to pray aright, 2 We perish if we cease from prayer; 3 Burden'd with guilt, convinced of sin, 4 GOD of all grace, we bring to Thee Give, what Thine eye delights to see, 5 Give deep humility; the sense To hear Thy voice and live; 6 Faith in the only Sacrifice To cast our hopes, to fix our eyes, 7 Patience to watch, and wait, and weep, Though mercy long delay; Courage, our fainting souls to keep, |
