4 The praise of God,-delightful theme!—
Shall fill my heart and tongue:
Let all creation bless his name
In one eternal song.

172.

C. M.

MRS. STEELE.

Distinguished Goodness of God to Man.

1 THY wisdom, power and goodness, Lord,
In all thy works appear;

But most thy praise should man record,
Man, thy distinguished care.

2 From thee the breath of life he drew;
That breath thy power maintains;
Thy tender mercy, ever new,
His brittle frame sustains.

3 Thy providence, his constant guard,
When threatening ills impend,
Or will th' impending dangers ward,
Or timely succors lend.

4 Yet nobler favors claim his praise,
Of reason's light possest;

By revelation's brighter rays
Still more divinely blest.

5 All bounteous Lord, thy grace impart;
O teach me to improve

Thy gifts with ever grateful heart,
And crown them with thy love.

1 Up to the hills I lift mine eyes,
The eternal hills beyond the skies;
Thence all her help my soul derives;
There my Almighty Refuge lives.

2 He lives; the everlasting God,

That built the world, that spread the flood;
The heavens with all their hosts he made,
And the dark regions of the dead.

3 He guides our feet, he guards our way,
His morning smiles bless all the day;
He spreads the evening veil, and keeps
The silent hours while Israel sleeps.

4 Israel, a name divinely blest,
May rise secure, securely rest;
Thy holy guardian's wakeful eyes
Admit no slumber nor surprise.

5 No sun shall smite thy head by day,
Nor the pale moon with sickly ray
Shall blast thy couch; no baleful star
Dart his malignant fire so far.

6 Should earth and hell with malice burn,
Still thou shalt go, and still return,
Safe in the Lord! his heavenly care
Defends thy life from every snare.

God our Preserver. Ps. 121.

1 UPWARD I lift mine eyes;

From God is all my aid;
The God that built the skies,
And earth and nature made:
God is the tower

To which I fly;
His grace is nigh
In every hour.

2 My feet shall never slide,
And fall in fatal snares,

Since God, my guard and guide,
Defends me from my fears.

Those wakeful eyes,

Which never sleep,

Shall Israel keep,
When dangers rise.

3 No burning heats by day,
Nor blasts of evening air,
Shall take my health away,
If God be with me there.

Thou art my sun,
And thou my shade,
To guard my head
By night or noon.

4 Hast thou not given thy word,
To save my soul from death;
And I can trust my Lord
To keep my mortal breath.

God's Love of the Saints. Ps. 34.
1 LORD, I will bless thee all my days;
Thy praise shall dwell upon my tongue;
My soul shall glory in thy grace,
While saints rejoice to hear the song.

2 Come, magnify the Lord with me;
Let every heart exalt his name:
I sought th' eternal God, and he
Has not exposed my hope to shame.

3 His holy angels pitch their tents
Around the men that serve the Lord:
O fear and love him, all his saints;
Taste of his grace, and trust his word.

1

WHEN all thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise.

2 Unnumbered comforts on my soul
Thy tender care bestowed,
Before my infant heart conceived

From whom those comforts flowed.

3 When in the slippery paths of youth
With heedless steps I ran,
I

Thine arm, unseen, conveyed me safe,
And led me up to man.

4 When worn with sickness, oft hast thou
With health renewed my face;
And when in sin and sorrow sunk,
Revived my soul with grace.

5 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.

6 Through every period of my life,
Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

1 LORD, we are blind, we mortals blind; 3,7
We can't behold thy bright abode :

Oh, 't is beyond a creature mind
To glance a thought half-way to God.
2 Infinite leagues beyond the sky,
The great Eternal reigns alone,
Where neither wings nor souls can fly,
Nor angels climb the topless throne.

3 The Lord of Glory builds his seat
Of gems incomparably bright,
And lays beneath his sacred feet
Substantial beams of gloomy night.
