Their wicked, vile designs, would you defeat,
Shew that the lower orders are your care,
In doing which, to make the work complete,
Of land, let ev'ry rustic rent a share.

Thus would you gain a grateful nation's love,

Who bravely would your ancient rights defend; So you your care and love for them would prové, If you would thus the present system mend. If still you'd keep the comforts now possess'd? If you your children's happiness desire? In Heaven's name, I earnestly request

You soon to do what myriads now require. Then once more we shall see such plenteous years, As erst were seen in seasons past and gone; Then to the winds we'll give our anxious fears,

And pray for you before th' eternal throne. Our children too, in days to come, shall bless Those patriots who made plenty smile again, When you're remov'd, and happily possess

That glorious state where joys immortal reign. O THOU! Who dos't with justice now withhold Those plentiful supplies we've often seen; And hast permitted many, young and old,

To be sore pinch'd, and vex'd by hunger keen : TO THEE belongs forgiveness; Lord, to thee, With penitence and pray'r behold we turn; TO THEE for succour in distress we flee; Let not thy wrath against us longer burn.

Incline the great whom thou with wealth hast blest; And given vast possessions here below,

Effectually to succour the distrest:

[ocr errors]

To ev'ry rank, O! let thy goodness flow.

And may thy mercies be no more abus'd
By us, ungrateful, as in years gone by ;-
Of this black crime we justly are accus'd,

And guilty stand before the Lord most high.
Henceforth may all with moderation use,

The precious gifts thy providence bestows; Nor to adore the Giver e'er refuse,

The gracious hand from whence each comfort flows. O may we henceforth live in peace and love,

Like brethren live,-be pious, just, and kind; 'Til fitted by thy grace for worlds above,

Where peace eternal dwells, 'midst pleasures unconfin'd.
