WING to the vivid interest which attaches to

the history of Venice, and the magnificent architectural monuments which adorn the ancient city, it was thought that a book purporting to be at once a record and a description-a manual for the young student, and a series of sketches for the general reader-might prove acceptable to the English public.

With this view the present volume was compiled, and it is believed that in its own limited sphere it stands almost, if not quite, alone; that an account of the "relics' and "sights" of Venice, and a summary of its annals, are not to be elsewhere obtained in so portable a shape.
