PSALM 31.

N thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: deliver me in thy righteousness.

Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

O, how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou show

est to them that trust in thee.

Thou hidest them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man; thou shelterest them in thy pavilion from the strife of tongues.

Blessed be the Lord: for he hath showed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

O love the Lord, all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

not hid.

I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.

Therefore shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayst be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

Thou art my hiding-place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble: thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliver

PSALM 33.

God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for

REJOICE in the Lord, O his own inheritance.

ye righteous: for praise

is comely for the upright.

The word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.

He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the deep in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

The Lord bringeth the counsel of the nations to naught; he maketh the devices of the kingdoms of none effect.

The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Blessed is the nation whose

The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

He fashioneth the hearts of all; he observeth all their works.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul waiteth on the Lord: he is our help and our shield.

For our heart rejoices in him; we trust in his holy name.

Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only wise God,

Be honor and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

SELECTION EIGHTH.

PSALM 40.

WAITED patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God:

Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and resorteth not to men of pride and falsehood.

Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done; many are thy gracious thoughts toward us;

If we would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; so hast thou taught me.

Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.

I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: Lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest.

I have not hid thy righteous

ness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation:

I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord:

Let thy loving-kindness and thy truth continually preserve

me.

For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up;

They are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.

Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me.

Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee:

Let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.

But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me:

Thou art my help and my deliverer: make no tarrying, O my God.

[blocks in formation]

disquieted in me? hope thou in God:

For I shall yet praise him; him, my deliverer and my God. Deep calleth unto deep with the roar of thy cataracts: all thy waves and thy billows have gone over me.

Yet the Lord will command his loving-kindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only wise God,

Be honor and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PSALM 15.

LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

He that slandereth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, and uttereth no reproach against his neighbor.

In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoreth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh a bribe against the innocent.

He that doeth these things shall never fall.

PSALM 37.

FRET not thyself because of evil doers, neither be thou envious of those who work iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall give thee success.

And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

For the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his

way.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.

The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee:

Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

The salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble.
