2 Sinners, turn, why will ye die?
God the Spirit asks you why;
He who all your lives hath strove,
Wooed you to embrace his love.
3 See the suffering God appears,
Jesus weeps, believe his tears,
Mingled with his blood they cry,
Why will ye for ever die?

P.M.

64. Come and Welcome. FROM the cross uplifted high,

Where the Saviour deigns to die, What melodious sounds I hear, Bursting on my ravished ear: Love's redeeming work is done, Come and welcome, sinner, come. 2 Sprinkled now with blood the

throne,
Why beneath thy burdens groan?
On my pierced body laid,
Justice owns the ransom paid.

Bow the knee, and kiss the Son,
Come and welcome, sinner, come.
3 Spread for thee, the festive board,
See with richest dainties stor'd;
To the Father's bosom press'd,
Yet again a child confessed,

Never from his house to roam : Come and welcome, sinner, come. 4 Soon the days of life shall end, Lo! I come, your Saviour, friend; Safe your spirits to convey To the realms of endless day. Up to thy eternal home, Come and welcome, sinner, come. The Crucifixion.

Son of Man they did betray, He was condemned and led away;

Think, O my soul, that mournful day,
Look on Mount Calvary!
Behold him lamb-like led along,
Surrounded by a wicked throng,
Accused by each lying tongue,
And thus the Lamb of God was
hung

Upon the shameful tree.

2 'Twas thus the glorious sufferer stood,

With hands and feet nail'd to the wood,

From every wound a stream of blood Came trickling down amain:

His bitter groans all nature shook, And at his voice the rocks were broke,

The sleeping saints their graves forsook,

The spiteful Jews around him mocked,

And laughed at his pain.

3 Thus hung between the earth and skies,

Behold him tremble as he dies;
Oh, sinner, hear his mournful cries,
Behold his torturing pain:
The mourning sun withdrew his
light,

Blush'd and refused to own the sight,
All azure clothed in robes of night,
All nature mourned and stood
affright,

When Christ the Lord was slain. 4 Ye men and angels, hear the Son, He cries for help, and there is none, He treads the wine-press all alone,

His garments stained with blood;
In lamentation hear him cry,
Eli lama Sabachthani!"
Though death may close his languid

eyes,

He soon would mount above the skies,

The conquering Son of God.

5 See Jews and Romans in a band, The Lord of Life they thus do brand, Saying, If thou 'rt come to save our land,

Now try thyself to free.
A soldier pierc'd him when he died,
And healing streams flow'd from
his side,

And thus the Lord was crucified,
Stern justice now is satisfied,
Sinners, for you and me.

6 'Tis done, the precious ransom 's paid,

The great atonement now is made,
Sinners, on him your guilt was laid,

For you he spilt his blood;
For you his tender heart did move,
For you he left his courts above,
That you the length and breadth
might prove,

The depth and height of perfect
love,

In Christ your smiling God.

And angels will guard them from bottom to top.

He fills the mediatorial seat,

In loud hosannahs tell,

And led the monster death in chains,

While music fills bright Salem's
He's conquered death and hell.
8 Go now, ye heralds of his grace,
Proclaim to all the fallen race
The words of reconciling peace,
You all may be forgiven:
You all may taste the gift, 'tis free,
You all may this salvation see,
The worst may now converted be,
And drink the living stream with

The Jubilee.

P. M.

THE Lord from heaven came down,
A guilty world to save;
To claim us for his own,

His spotless life he gave;
He groan'd and died upon the tree,
It is the year of Jubilee.
When he rose from the dead,

And triumph'd o'er the grave,
He bruis'd the serpent's head,

And show'd his power to save. Ye captive souls, ye may be free, It is the year of Jubilee.

When he to glory went,

And gifts for men receiv'd,
The Holy Ghost he sent,

And burden'd souls relieved:
Salvation now for all is free,
It is the year of Jubilee.
Ye heralds of his grace,

Now spread the truth around,
And Adam's fallen race

Shall hear the joyful sound: Proclaim the news from sea to sea, It is the year of Jubilee.

1OFT am led to wonder and wonder o'er again: [endless pain;

I wonder I am saved from wrath and I wonder at God's mercy, his kind protecting care,

I wonder I, a sinner, the Lord should please to spare.

2 How wonderfully pleasing the wonders of free grace,

A wonder sure of wonders to Adam's fallen race; [should provide, A wonder God so richly for sinners A wonderful salvation, that none may be denied.

3 How wonderful that Jesus should leave his Father's throne, And to a world of sinners his mercy here make known;

The more I'm led to wonder my wonders still increase,

I wonder that my Saviour should die to give me peace.

4 The hosts above will wonder if I should there arrive,

And I myself shall wonder to see myself alive;

A wonder then in heaven to all I there shall be, [be unto me. But still the greatest wonder it will Our Zion yet shall rise.

69. 1 COME, friends, let's lift our voices to Christ our heavenly king, And while our heart rejoices, his praises let us sing; Though enemies assail us, we soon shall win the prize, Then let us sing in chorus, Our Zion yet shall rise.

Chorus.

O that will be joyful! our Zion yet shall rise, &c.

2 Our foes we are defeating; brave soldiers, stand your ground; The enemy's retreating, and fleeing all around;

The Lord is fighting for us, behold,
his thunder flies,

Then let us sing in chorus, Our
Zion yet shall rise.

3 In every village round us, our banners we shall raise,

And thousands flocking round us, shall sing Jehovah's praise; Though cowards now desert us, the the man of courage cries,

In spite of all our conflicts, Our
Zion yet shall rise.

4 Ye heralds of salvation, in Jesu's name go on,

With courage take your station, and put your armour on;

The trophies of our Jesus we will view with growing joys, Then let us sing in chorus, Our Zion yet shall rise.

'O Lord, revive thy work.'
S. M.

FATHER! hear our prayer,
And let thy Spirit strive;

Amidst the years thy arm make bare,
And thy great work revive.

Thy all-commanding voice
Can make the dead alive,

Can make believers' hearts rejoice,
And thy own work revive.

Our cause, O Jesus! plead,
That we in thee may thrive;
Now with the Father intercede,
And let thy work revive.
Grant preachers, leaders, may
In faith and patience strive,
And with thy people ever pray,
O Lord, thy work revive.

WEST.

O'er heaven's eternal plain, And utter'd his unceased cry, The Lord will shortly reign!'

[wings,

2 He stretch'd his broad and blazing
And as he flew along,
Poor Zion she began to sing,
The sweet delightful song.

3 Down from the portals of the sky,
With majesty he came,
With glory beaming in his eye,

Then flash'd the mighty flame.

4 Thus darkness flew before his face, And antichrist did fall,

As he proclaim'd t' the fallen race, That mercy's free for ALL! 5 O'er all the dreary scene he went, And sin and hell gave way; The veil from off the world he rent, Then burst the gospel day.

72. FLY, ye sinners, to yon mountain, There the purple stream doth flow,

you

There 'll find an open fountain,
That will wash you white as snow.
Oh, come quickly,

And its cleansing virtues know. 2 Never ponder o'er your meanness, But to Calvary repair;

There's the fountain for uncleanness,
And the worst is welcome there.

[blocks in formation]

He will freely take you in, With his blood he'll wash you clean. Come to Jesus, sinners, come; Still he cries, there yet is room. 2 Oh! how great was Jesu's love, For it brought him from above; He came salvation for to buy, That sinful man may never die. Come to Jesus, sinners, come; Still he cries, there yet is room. 3 On the cross the Saviour died, There the Lord was crucified, Died forgiveness to obtain; Praise the Lamb for sinners slain. Come to Jesus, sinners, come; Still he cries, there yet is room. 4 Happy they who know the Lord, And believe his holy word; They his favours now enjoy, And shall reign above the sky.

5

Come to Jesus, sinners, come; Still he cries, there yet is room. When to Jordan's brink we come, Then the Lord will take us home, Take us to a land of rest,

There to dwell among the blest. Come to Jesus, sinners, come; Still he cries, there yet is room. 6 All our trials will be o'er

When we land on Canaan's shore;
There we shall the Saviour see,
Shout in heaven the victory.

The Gospel Ship.
C. M.

FROM Calvary's rugged mount

was launched

The vessel of free grace, [stor'd,
Well rigg'd, and with provision
Bound for the port of peace;
O'er the tempestuous sea of life
She'll her rich cargo bring,
And every Christian mariner

On board, with joy can sing,
Chorus.

O'er life's rough sea we mean to
Till we our harbour gain; [sail,
Blow, gentle gale, fill every sail,
And waft us o'er the main.
Sent by the Captain, I invite
You all to come and wear
The costly robe of righteousness
With which he 'll clothe you there.

The rolling seas run high; The dreadful whirlpool of despair, And rocks of pride are nigh; But still our Captain guides the helm,

Between those rocks he 'll steer;

The soul-for God is there.

2 Let foes assault us by the way,
And tempests rend the sky;
Let Satan shoot his fiery daits,
To interrupt our joy;

But still our passage we 'll pursue,
Our vessel is secure ;

We'll keep the heavenly port in view,
And still the storm endure.

3 All hands on deck, the Captain cries, The storm will soon be o'er; Blow on, ye gentle gales of grace,

And waft us to the shore; -
Soon we shall pass the gulf of death,

And in the port appear,

Chorus.

Hoist every sail to catch the gale,
Each sailor ply the oar;
Though storms and tempests may
arise,

We soon shall reach the shore.
2 And are you not afraid some storm
Your bark will overwhelm ?
We cannot fear-the Lord is here;
Our Father's at the helm.'

3

Our compass is the sacred word,
Our anchor's blooming hope,
The love of God's our maintop-sail,
And faith 's our cable rope.

4 We've look'd astern on many toils,
Which Christ has brought us thro';
We're looking now a-head, and lo!
The land appears in view.

5 Send out your boats-we'll go on board,

If you can find us room.

We've room for you and all the world:

Make no delay, but come.

6 The sun is up, the clouds are gone; The heavens above are clear; The city bright appears in sight; We're getting round the pier.

7 When all the storms of life are past, And we the port obtain,

We'll praise the Lamb in nobler strains,

Who died and rose again.
