create a heaven within us upon earth, and make us meet for the heaven which thou hast prepared for us in glory! We want thy Spirit, that we may enjoy the grace of prayer; we want thy Spirit, that we may enjoy the grace of love; we want thy Spirit, that we may enjoy the grace of humility; we want thy Spirit, that we may have grace to subdue all our vile and evil tempers. We need grace to mortify every lust. We pray that we may be enabled to come "boldly to the throne of grace, that we may find mercy and grace to help in every time of need." Let these supplications be heard and answered, for the sake of Him who hath given us "abundantly above all that we can ask and think.”

A Minister's earnest supplication for the souls of his flock assembled before him.

THOU art seated in glory, thou most glorious God! Holy is God the Father; holy is God the Son; holy is God the Spirit. What are we? Unholy in the sight of the infinite, triune Jehovah! We would not come before thee in a presumptuous manner, for it is fit that we ap

proach thee with self-abasement and self-abhorrence, and lie very low in the dust in thy sight. "We have sinned against heaven, and before thee," and are no longer worthy to be numbered among thy children. But, O Lord! what grace and compassion, to send thine only Son, thy well-beloved Son, as an ambassador of love to this world of ours; and to send out ministers under the glorious power of that glorious Redeemer, "to beseech people in Christ's stead to be reconciled to God." O what a message is ours! Would to God it might be blessed, and that souls might feel the good of it. We feel our utter insufficiency and inability to attempt a work so very sacred and important. O let us not touch the sacred harp with unholy hands; but may we be prepared by the grace of God to preach concerning the grace of God, and be enabled so to speak that souls may be won to God. There are many before thee, O Lord, who have never been won, and we pray thee to grant thy winning grace and power. Thou hast grace and power enough to bring multitudes to thyself. Shall thy arm be shorténed that it cannot save, and men's ears wax dull they may not hear? O Lord, help us to bring ourselves near to thee by prayer. We

know that our prayers are unworthy, yet we are commanded to pray. O God, send thy blessing down with all thy power. We are assembled here to hear thy word, and we pray that we may hear it under the influence of thy Spirit. Lord, reveal thy power, which can effect wonders on the heart, that thereby much good may be done among the dead in trespasses and sins. When shall the gospel trumpet awaken such to live to thee? Ere the time comes when the last trump shall sound, may many dead sinners be roused by the voice of the gospel trumpet, and fly to wait on thee. Help me, O God, both in body and mind. The body needs it, but the mind much more. Lord, help both, and grant that thy blessing may be in the midst of us. There are some sick, weak, and distressed, who beg an interest in our prayers; be pleased to grant their request. There are some here present who have brought their children and others to hear. O disappoint them not. Let all ministers be made very much alive to thee. Quicken our spirits according to thy word, and do good to the souls of all. Accept thanksgivings on behalf of those who have been mercifully delivered in the time of childbirth, and where life is spared and life given, may the

offspring be brought up in the fear of the Lord. Look down in great mercy and grace upon those who are in affliction of any sort, and give them "a happy issue" out of all for thy name's sake. O Lord, I pray thee give me that which I shall feel to be profitable to my own soul, and make it useful to the souls of the people. According to the course of nature, thy poor creature is preaching some of his last sermons-God grant that they may be his most useful ones. Awake, awake, O arm of the Lord! and let his glory be revealed. We sum up all these our supplications and prayers in our dear Saviour's name and words. Our Father, &c.

A prayer for Himself and fellow Ministers.

O LORD, my work is an important one. I feel myself totally unequal to it. Let me find my sufficiency in thee. Who can preach of divine things as becomes the importance of the subject? God forbid that we should use lightness in preaching of them. We should preach as from the heart, and to the heart. Let ministers of thy word act worthily, that men may know

what thou hast done in them, and that they may be living examples to their flocks. Let not thy church be corrupted by carnal men, but may they who bear the vessels of the Lord be holy; and live in love before thee, being adorned with all manner of holy conversation and godliness. May they preach those glorious truths, which by the power of thy Spirit, shall accomplish wonders on the souls of men.

Prayer against sinful and disturbing
thoughts.

O LORD, may every thought be dumb that would keep us away from thy throne of grace, that we may lay ourselves open before thee, and receive out of that fulness which flows from thy bounteous hand. "The preparation of the heart," O Lord, "is from thee." From thee alone flows the sweet Spirit of supplication and prayer. It is by thee alone that our minds can be kept in a praying frame. O that we may with God, that

be taught of God how to deal

God himself may deal with us. We are in a very troublesome world, and we have hearts prone
