other. Lord, help us each to adorn whatever situation we may fill. May we all hear thy word with holy solemnity of mind. Grant that those of us who are in our declining days, may find our souls to be specially revived by thee, that we may be made ripe for heaven before the day of our death. Lord, hear our prayers for all the survivors of our Royal Family; prepare our aged sovereign for a more glorious crown, and may his successors be made meet for their throne by grace upon their hearts. We entreat thee to hear and answer our prayers for the sake of our dear Redeemer. Our Father, &c.

Prayer before Sermon, Jan. 17th, 1819.

THOU, O Lord, art infinitely more exalted than the most glorious of created beings can ever be, yet thou needest not to be told of thy own greatness; but O may we be humbled before thee, under a sense of the perfect purity and sublimity of thy divine Majesty. What are we in thy sight! There is that in thy divine existence, which should make us blush with shame when we think, though man was made in thy image, how is that image defaced, and how sin

ful we are. But, glory be to thy name, thou hast provided a mode of salvation, and that salvation is completed by the power of thy Holy Spirit sent to regenerate a race of fallen sinners, redeemed by Christ Jesus, and commanded to stand forth to the glory of His grace who hath power to quicken the "dead in trespasses and sins." We wait upon our God for this power, and may we be enabled to experience that no one waiteth on thee in vain, and that thou wilt renew the strength of thy people who draw near to thee for a revival of it. Blessed for ever be our God, for all the mercies we possess. Quicken us by the power of thy Spirit, in the preaching of thy word. Let those who hear feel God's presence in their hearts, and may light shine forth, and do abundance of good to the souls of men. Succour all that need thy succouring hand. Save the lives of useful and valuable Christians that their children may be brought up in "the nurture and admonition of the Lord." May all alarms and trials be sanctified. May those before thee feel the spiritual presence of the Lord; let thy word have a gracious influence on every mind, and may the gospel be a blessing to us all, for Christ's sake. Our Father, &c.

A humble acknowledgment of the power and goodness of God.

O LORD GOD, whilst thou art exalted in the Majesty of thy throne, far above what any comprehension of ours can reach; whilst thine infinite glory is the wonder of celestial beings, and whilst their services are so far beyond ours, and more worthy of thee,—yet thou condescendest to lend a gracious ear to the words of sinners, vile and worthless as we are. We come to thee through that living way which thou hast ordained,—the sacrifice of God our Saviour, the great atoning Redeemer, who "purged our sins by his own blood." O may he destroy the dominion of sin in every one of our souls, that "grace may reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord," and that we may have our minds brought into holy conformity to thy divine mind and will. How frequently have we to mourn over the impertinent thoughts, which divert our minds from their sacred exercises in thy presence. Condescend, O God, to take the total management of us into thy hands, for we find it more than we can do, to control the evil of our own hearts. We are filled with holy

surprise in thinking of thine infinity, O gracious God! Thou canst manage all things at the same moment of time. If thou wert to create ten thousand times more worlds than now exist, they would not surpass the power of thy omnipresence to pervade them all! Thy greatness is too wonderful for us; and yet what condescension hast thou shewn to man, in bringing thy people to thyself by such mysterious ways. of mercy and compassion! If we are deprived of all besides, we feel that we have every thing in thee!

A Thanksgiving for the Saviour's Incarnation.

O GOD, our poor finite minds can have no just comprehension of thine infinite glory. It becomes us to bow with humble reverence before thee, and to give that honour which is due to thine infinite name. Lord, we beseech thee, that while we feel our dependence, and tremble, or ought to tremble before thy splendour, yet still we may draw near with confidence, knowing that the same glorious Being, that is adored by all the celestial powers above, will accept our adoration also. We desire to feel thy greatness, and yet

love thee for thy goodness. Whilst we tremble under a sense of thy Majesty, may we love thee, because thou art still our God in a Saviour's love. O that the "High and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity," should condescend to take a body like ours, and that "all the fullness of the Godhead" should dwell in man's personthat the same glorious Lord, whom "the heaven of heavens cannot contain," should deign to enter our humble frame! such knowledge is too wonderful for us, and while we cannot comprehend it by our reason, we bless thee that thou hast revealed it, and what we cannot reach unto, we adore.

A confession of the unworthiness of the best of men.

O THOU God of infinite compassion, we are yet upheld through the riches of thy patience and forbearance towards us very unworthy creatures and rebels. If infinite patience did not possess thy mind, we should long ago have been banished from thy presence; for though, through mercy, many of us have been redeemed from those outward sins which offend the eyes
