same time, to be led to a more entire dependence upon God, and to be kept in the dust, that I may be more in prayer, and that all good things may be so sweetly and powerfully operating on my heart, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, as to give an unction to my work.

A minister should aim so to preach the bible into his people's hearts, that the world may see that a sweet correspondence exists between their conduct and the bible.

I have served my congregation nearly fifty years, and have never quarrelled with any of them but on account of their sins. Thanks be to God, peace has reigned amongst us.

When cleansing the Lord's garden, we must only cast the weeds over the fence; it is God's province to throw them into the fire.

I have heard some persons, when leaving a place of worship, admiring the minister, and exclaiming, "what splendid language!—what beautiful metaphors!-what original illustrations!" May they rather say, after hearing me,

"what sinners we are!-what a glorious Christ we have!-what a blessed salvation!"

Exemplifying duty does more than explaining it.

It is not the dress of the sermon, but its sum and substance which does good to the mind.

Young ministers never begin well, except they begin with a sense of the necessity of total dependence upon God.

I have often thought of the following good advice from an old minister: "whenever you take a practical text, preach upon it evangelically, and when you take an evangelical text preach upon it practically." These two modes are not opposed to each other, but beautifully harmonize together.

Two things are to be particularly aimed at by every minister-good conduct and sound truth.

'A minister, who was awakened late in life, uttered this exclamation of regret, "O what would I give for the recall of those souls who

may have perished under my ministry, before I learned to preach Christ."

When I see my people indifferent, I always carefully examine myself, to discover whether it is occasioned by my own dullness.

DEVOTIONS.

The soul desires not only to speak to God, but to make melody to God: the heart is the instrument, but the graces are the strings, and prayer the touching them.

The veteran gave us an incomparable prayer.

CHARNOCK.
