FEEL a hope that the plainness and simplicity of the following Discourses will not be thought to render them wholly unworthy of Your Majesty's notice. They were written to instruct the ignorant, not to dazzle or inform the wise.

It was a duty arising from my situation, constantly to study perspicuity more than ornament, and to endeavour to be intelligible rather than profound. But Your Majesty is not likely to turn away from them on this account. I believe firmly, that the most unenlightened of His Majesty's subjects are
