3 Fair shall be Thine earthly temple:
Here the careless passer-by
Shall bethink him, in its beauty,
Of the holier House on high.
Weary hearts and troubled spirits
Here shall find a still retreat;
Sinful souls shall bring their burden
Here to the Absolver's feet.

4 Yet with truer, nobler beauty,
Lord, we pray, this house adorn,
Where Thy Bride, Thy Church redeemed,
Robes her for her marriage morn;
Clothed in garments of salvation,
Rich with gems of heavenly grace,
Spouse of Christ, arrayed and waiting
Till she may behold His face.

5 Here in due and solemn order
May her ceaseless prayer arise;
Here may strains of holy gladness
Lift her heart above the skies;
Here the word of life be spoken;
Here the child of God be sealed;
Here the Bread of heaven be broken,
"Till He come" Himself revealed.

6 Praise to Thee, O Master-Builder,
Maker of the earth and skies;
Praise to Thee, in whom Thy temple
Fitly framed together lies;
Praise to Thee, Eternal Spirit,
Binding all that lives in one:
Till our earthly praise be ended,
And the eternal song begun!

1 THE Church's one foundation

Is Jesus Christ her Lord;

She is His new creation

By water and the Word:

From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy Bride;

With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.

2 Elect from every nation,

Yet one o'er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation

One Lord, one faith, one birth,.

One holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.

3 Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore opprest,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distrest,

Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.

1

"Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God.”

GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken, Grace, which like the Lord the giver,

Zion, city of our God;

He, whose word cannot be broken, Formed thee for His own abode :

2 On the Rock of Ages founded,

What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.

3 See, the streams of living waters,
Springing from eternal love,
Well supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove:

4 Who can faint while such a river

Ever flows their thirst to assuage;

Never fails from age to age?

5 Round each habitation hovering,
See the cloud and fire appear,
For a glory and a covering;
Showing that the Lord is near.

6 Saviour, if of Zion's city
I, through grace, a member am,
Let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in Thy name:

7 Fading is the worldling's pleasure,
All his boasted pomp and show;
Solid joys and lasting treasure
None but Zion's children know.

Clauder's Psalmodia Nova, 1630:

BRESLAU (L.M.)

"The laying on of the hands of the presbytery."

LORD, pour Thy Spirit from on high,

And Thine ordainèd servants bless;

Graces and gifts to each supply,

And clothe Thy priests with righteousness.

2 Within Thy temple, when they stand
To teach the truth, as taught by Thee,
Saviour, like stars in Thy right hand
Let all Thy Church's pastors be.

3 Wisdom, and zeal, and love impart,
Firmness with meekness from above,

To bear Thy people in their heart,
And love the souls whom Thou dost love;

4 To love, and pray, and never faint,

By day and night their guard to keep,

To warn the sinner, form the saint,

To feed Thy lambs, and tend Thy sheep.

5 So when their work is finished here,

They may in hope their charge resign!
So when their Master shall appear,
They may with crowns of glory shine!

1 JESUS, with Thy Church abide,
Be her Saviour, Lord, and Guide,
While on earth her faith is tried:
We beseech Thee, hear us.

2 Keep her life and doctrine pure;
Grant her patience to endure,
Trusting in Thy promise sure:

We beseech Thee, hear us.

3 May her voice be ever clear, Warning of a judgment near, Telling of a Saviour dear:

We beseech Thee, hear us.

4 All her fettered powers release, Bid our strife and envy cease, Grant the heavenly gift of peace:

We beseech Thee, hear us.

5 May she one in doctrine be, One in truth and charity. Winning all to faith in Thee.

We beseech Thee, hear us.

6 May she guide the poor and blind,
Seek the lost until she find,
And the broken-hearted bind:

We beseech Thee, hear us.

[blocks in formation]

13 May she soon all glorious be,
Spotless and from wrinkle free,
Pure and bright and worthy Thee:
We beseech Thee, hear us.
