And offer up our prayer;

A gracious God will mercy show

To all that worship there.

His watchword at the gates of death-
He enters heaven with prayer.

5 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;
While angels in their songs rejoice,
And cry-"Behold he prays!"

2 A throne of grace! oh, at that throne 6 O thou, by whom we come to God

The Life, the Truth, the Way ;
The path of prayer thyself hast trod;
Lord! teach us how to pray.

To God unbosom your complaints, THERE

And then inquire his will.

4 A throne of grace we yet shall need Long as we draw our breath,

I

A Saviour, too, to intercede,

Till we are changed by death.

Beneath the wing of night;
There is an ear that never shuts,
When sink the beams of light.

2 There is an arm that never tires,
When human strength gives way;
There is a love that never fails,
When earthly loves decay.

PRAY Sire,

Unuttered or expressed;

The motion of a hidden fire

That trembles in the breast.

2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.

3 Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try ;
Prayer the sublimest strains that reach
The majesty on high.

4 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air :

That arm upholds the sky;

That ear is filled with angel songs ;

That love is throned on high.

Returning whence it came;
Love is the sacred fire within,
And prayer the rising flame.

2 It gives the burdened spirit ease,

And soothes the troubled breast;
Yields comfort to the mourning soul,
And to the weary rest.

3 When God inclines the heart to pray,
He hath an ear to hear;
To him there's music in a sigh,
And beauty in a tear.

And let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord,

And thus surround the throne.

2 Let those refuse to sing

Who never knew our God,
But children of the heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad.

3 The men of grace have found
Glory begun below;

Celestial fruits on earthly ground
From faith and hope may grow.

A thousand sacred sweets
Before we reach the heavenly fields,
Or walk the golden streets.

To praise thy name, and hear thy word,
And grateful offerings bring.

2 Sweet, at the dawning hour,

Thy boundless love to tell; And when the night-wind shuts the flower,

Still on the theme to dwell.

3 Sweet, on this day of rest,

To join in heart and voice.

With those who love and serve thee best,
And in thy name rejoice.

Be every Sabbath given,

That such may be our blest employ Eternally in heaven.

That saw the Lord arise!
Welcome to this reviving breast,
And these rejoicing eyes !-

2 The King himself comes near,
And feasts his saints to-day;
Here may we sit and see him here,
And love, and praise, and pray.

For ye have felt his love;

Come, let us kneel and pray ; Prayer is the Christian pilgrim's staff To walk with God all day.

2 At noon, beneath the Rock

Of Ages, rest and pray ;
Sweet is that shelter from the sun,
In the weary heat of day.

3 At evening, in thy home,

Around its altar, pray;

And finding there the house of God,
With heaven then close the day.

When midnight vails our eyes,

Oh, it is sweet to say,

I sleep, but my heart waketh, Lord,

With thee to watch and pray.

HIS is the day of light :

ΤΗ

S. M.

Let there be light to-day:

O Day-spring, rise upon our night,
And chase its gloom away.

This is the day of rest:

Our failing strength renew!

On weary brain and troubled breast
Shed thou thy freshening dew.

3 This is the day of peace :

Thy peace our spirits fill ;

Bid thou the blast of discord cease,
The waves of strife be still.

4 This is the day of prayer:

Let earth to heaven draw near; Lift up our hearts to seek thee there; Come down to meet us here.

5 This is the first of days;

I

Send forth thy quickening breath, And wake dead souls to love and praise, O Vanquisher of death!

2 We have not reached that land,
That happy land, as yet,
Where holy angels round thee stand,
Whose sun can never set.

3 Our sun is sinking now;
Our day is almost o'er:

O Sun of Righteousness, do thou
Shine on us evermore!

SOF

Of the holy Sabbath day;
Gently as life's setting sun,
When the Christian's course is run.

2 Night her solemn mantle spreads
O'er the earth, as daylight fades;
All things tell of calm repose
At the holy Sabbath's close.
3 Peace is on the world abroad;
'Tis the holy peace of God-
Symbol of the peace within
When the spirit rests from sin.
4 Still the Spirit lingers near,
Where the evening worshipper
Seeks communion with the skies,
Pressing onward to the prize.

5 Saviour, may our Sabbaths be

7s.

Days of peace and joy in thee,
Till in heaven our souls repose,
Where the Sabbath ne'er shall close.
