"Where's your veillée, to-night ?" said Berkeley.

"Herbert named the Palais Royal," replied Emile, "but we drop-in to 'Les Aveugles.'

He was not to be had, however, on Camell and

Villiers setting out.

A numerous attendance dignified the rendezvous—which exhibited a phase of Parisian socialism-and vindicated its nomenclature of blindness*-for, not the shiny cups which minister inebriation, nor the added attractions of "lovely woman," availed against the clouds of vilelyperfumed smoke the "noisy rout" volumed through their low-roofed den. Its circuit accomplished, amidst manifold scowls and muchexpressive leers, during which Camell's disgust was, only by Villiers' incredible labor, restrained from vent-they mounted to a healthier atmosphere.

Above, a couple of figures awaited them. One, peering under Emile's hat, rushed against Camell. But the gleam from below glancing on an instrument in his clutch, Villiers swiftly interposed.

"Bravaches!" exclaimed the peer

"Defend you!" cried Emile.

vituperate the remissness of French police and the cowardice of French plunderers-but to Villiers' perplexity, who traced in his assaulter the mystic of Sapperton, the skulker beneath the arch of the Messageries.

Herbert, chanced-on half-an hour before that specified, marveled at the broil; and proposed adjournment to a different locale. He had news of De Préville's amalgamation with the Ministry (lately in the Opposition) through a dukedomquite unconduced-to by persuasion or even pique; which tergiversation-by Villiers, in unmeasured terms, inveighed against-Camell hotly commended, the aristocratic faction having the ascendant; though, had it been the popular party, he would have denounced the very same in an exactly inverse ratio.

"But it must lose him caste."

"By no means!" cried Camell, "the world' will eulogise his wisdom!-It's trite, that those who even compromise themselves, assenting to constitutional policy, acquire, in the esteeen of the Rightly-judging, more than they relinquish in that of the Erroneous."

"Let me be of the latter, then!" cried Villiers. "He's unworthy the companionship of inde

pendent minds-he's unworthy of his bewitching baronne."

Herbert coughed. "It's so frequent a business, 'twere futile to reprehend it; for (according to prevailing systems) Wealth and Power not only can purify everything, but the holiest ties become moral crimes* if contracted outside their bounds."

-'s gambling-house choked Emile' retort. Preceded by Camell and Herbert up the escalier, he spied-ascending the next flight with an incomparably handsome fille de joie-St. Leger: who, coevally perceiving him, leaned-over"Marlowe ' amongst the prophets'—

and, congratulatorily nodding, receded into dusk. Lord Camell's original delineation may be recalled as never evidencing downright and palpable virtues, yet entirely free from the least approximation to viciousness: therefore-an equal repudiator of gaming with Emile-he resorted hither solely because he had nothing else to do: and, just because Herbert led, took him for as

fair a guide as any, and tracked his windings with a most unthinking apathy.

Midst a crowd in the outer saloon whilst the two former dallied, he had wandered to the inner —whence quickly retrograding, he brought Emile aside, with "I've found him!"

"Who ?"
"Godwin."

"Well ?"

"Well?-you'll bear him my defiance-and support me."

"On my word, I'll do no such thing.-Camell! what could abet such a procedure?"

"And you've answered me?"

"Yes. And, for God's sake, be not precipitate."

"Mille remerciments!" responded he, angrily'you're to be depended-on !"

"I am," replied Villiers. "Lady Anne's loss, her family only should requite. But, were it otherwise, how far superior forgiveness!"

"What! 'sans défis! sans bastonnades! adieu le point d'honneur: impunité pour tous les insolents! De bonne foi, la supposition est impossible!' It must and shall be! You and I are privy to these 'arguments-the world' hears nought of
