bye;" yet delayed without, more indefatigable than any at diminishing the hold's contents.

There was scarce a diversity between the carriage of him who had overpassed half the term of longevity in perpetual friction with the flesh, and of him who was but issuing, as it were, into that troubled sphere. Herbert's composure augured self-satisfactory reminiscence-Villiers' contemplation a fearlessness of dying. Dying? why, here was life's absolute essence! where the spirit might be let forth into the strife and stir, the contention, and the crash, and the chaos, to mingle with them in their might, and lose the sentience of a meaner mortality.

The Nutshell scudded down upon a perilous lee-shore-whither precisely, it was impossible to ascertain, for the compass had been smashed. The verge of C was apprehended. The tempest's sublimity or horror abated not; it tore up, from the very sands, the surges. The barque flew reelingly under a press of canvas, to avoid being swamped-the certain consequence of a wave mountainous as these overtaking her-and with these held a superb and overstraining race: hurrah for the dashing and the slashing and

the squeal! Midnight frowned near; its enshrouding murkness which had not relaxed a fold, and the pandemoniac bellowing, might have been precursors to the Morn of Divine Judgment, and sent, if at the Good God's mandate, by the Arch-Fiend's agency.

Darkness and

Destruction stared abroad. shrieking Desolation reigned everywhere. But, blacker than the darkness, (as the Nutshell shot down into a gigantic trough) the dismasted hull of a large merchantman drove-beside, and a simultaneous flash lit-up the ghastly wretches that thronged her spars; but, phantom-like, she heaved-by, and the boat swept forward into the yawning mass of shade-beneath, the volumy billows-the tornado round-about-above, the pregnant coal-clouds-that triple purgatory! where a Fallen Angel might have reveled.

The foam had long hurtled-over, drenching all but, in fine, a vast swell broke above the helm-rebounded with an immaterial segment

of the gunwale and Villiers. The vessel itself spun, as from an under-current. There was stunning commotion in the vortex, and a more furious boil upon the deep. The rudder split, the boom gibed, the halyards burst into shreds;

and, dissolution visibly overhanging, midst a bewildering concussion and whirl, the tumultuous conflict of the insatiate main and maddening blast, she was cast up, safe, on Albion's southwestern beach.

No. 4.-The Cottage near B-ford.

OTWAY.-The Orphan.

Villiers recovered from his stupor, Camell (who, by the bye, testified a solicitude, that sat, not uneasily, but very unusually, upon him) concocted queries as to the condition of his corporeal functions, and administered a maximum of consolation by intelligence of Herbert's hunt after a doctor, while, the locale of their preservation being nearest Mrs. Travers', thither had Camell himself, at dawn, transported the "garçon defailli." Emile was the only maimed, by a bruise

upon his shoulder; nor did Mary disdain its tendance; but the doctor's arrival and opinionwhich demonstrated inverse ratio (the one being hotly precipitate, the other solemnly cool)—more embarrassed her; he prognosticating fever, and denouncing Emile's transfer to Woodley, his own home, (seven leagues apart) as suicidal—and even to Clevedon, Camell's, (less than half the distance) dangerous. But, a small spare room occurring to her, a couch was composed for him, and thereinto was he forthwith inducted.

A week elapsed. The Nutshell had been towed to her moorings, farther north. Herbert undertook to appease Dalyell's apprehensiveness, considerably heightened by counterpart inability to quit the house, from an irritating disorder, which, though science perish, will perpetuate the name of the Orrery family. He had, however, sent daily, both for inquiry, and transmission of cates not abominable to a patient's palate. And Camell had ridden-over twice-for the re-commencement of hunting prohibited any greater temporal sacrifice (indeed, his yachting was but the result of an epidemic amongst the hounds) -and had stopped, each time, twenty minutes. So that Villiers, after the second day equal to

sitting up, was entirely thrown for society upon his shelterer.

On the fifth, he might have departed, without risk: "But here"-was his reflection-" have I the relief of a variety, more than, in my wretchedness, I could have foreseen-a kindly companion: and what is there to call elsewhere?"

But the fifteenth of the month would conclude his seventeenth year; and natal anniversaries were rigidly commemorated by his father. He was constrained to vacate ere then; not ere his first plunge into a new being and the up-stirring of emotions dormant hitherto.

Mary Travers! there are eras in which weakness is dominant-when woman at once succumbs, and man trembles amidst vaunted superiority. In thee, the re-flow of natural feelings had just begun-just sought for some distinctive channel, which, in thy loneliness, was denied: Villiers was formed to furnish it, from peculiarity of situation, youth, frankness, unsuspectingness; more still, from that secret, adventitious depression which overclouded the joy that was his palpable birthright; for what arrow so fleet in reaching a womanly core as such a sort of mys
