Won by three lengths; the same between second and third. For this race several horses went the wrong course, and they passed the chair in different lots, some having pulled up and gone back round a post they missed. In the first lot Mandrake was first, Dr. Syntax second, and Knight Errant third. In the next lot Pearl Diver was first, Julia second, and Rama third. After these Pirate Chief came first, Miss Havelock second, and the Maid of Masham filly third. The Judge had left his chair when the last lot went past, but he saw them pass in the above order, standing by the side of it. Mr. 8. Thellusson claimed the race, on the ground that Pirate Chief ran the proper course; and Mr. Brayley also claimed it for Pearl Diver. The Stewards heard evidence on the case, and decided that it was no race, and that it must be run over again after the Sussex Stakes; which was done, and the horses came in as above. The following horses also started the first time, viz., Rama, 4 yrs, Sat 9ib (Custance); Julius, 3 yrs, 8st 1lb (Fordham); Miss Havalock, 4 yrs, 7st 91b (Cannon); Endsleigh, 5 yrs, 7st 4lb (Goodwin); f. by Y.
