deceive, and the like, it must be obferved, that by an ufual Hebraifm, thofe things are in Scripture afcribed to God, which he does not hinde from being done, but barely permits, or fuffers to be done. When thereTM fore God does not reftrain, he is, according to the Hebrew way of Speak ing, faid to give up; when he does not enlighten, he is faid to blind; and to harden, when he does not foften. Such things are fuffered to come upon Men as a juft Judgment and Punishment for their Infidelity and Wickedness. God cannot be properly faid to be the Caufe or Author of Mens Sins; nor does he do any thing which in its own Nature tends to the making them hard or blind. But when Men refufe, or abuse his Grace, and will not be made wifer and better by the Means and Opportunities he graciously affords them, he in his wife and righteous Providence deprives them of thofe Opportunities, and withdraws his Grace, and leaves them to themselves, and to be deceived by thofe Delusions they choose to follow, and then he is faid to give up, to harden, &c. The fame thing, Ats 14. 16. is expreffed by God's Suffering all Nations to walk in their own Ways. See the Note there. I humbly conceive, that when this is the Cafe, he does not generally fo wholly leave them, as that it is abfo lutely impoffible for them to repent and recover. See the Note on
