So the men fat down, in number about five thousand. 11. And Jefus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he diftributed to the difciples, and the difciples to them that were fet down; and likewife of the fishes, as much as they would. 12. When they were filled, he faid unto his difciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be loft. 13. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. 14. Then thofe men, when they had seen the miracle that Jefus did, faid, This is of a truth that Prophet that should come into the world. 15. When Jefus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. 16. And when Even was now come, his difciples went down unto the fea, 17. And entred into a fhip, and went over the fea towards Capernaum: and it was rov dark, and Jefus was not come to them. 18. fame Import: And the Reason why thofe to whom our Lord fpake did not come to him, is here faid to be, because they were not given him by the Father; that is, they were not fitted and prepared for receiving and believing in him by thofe Means the Father had afforded them. They refifted the Evidence our Lord gave them to prove that he was fent by the Father, to propofe the Terms on which they might be faved. Here is nothing in thefe Words which favours the Notion of an abfolute Decree, whereby fome few Perfons are elected to Eternal Life, and the much greater Part of Mankind reprobated. God would have taught them, and given them to his Son to be faved by him, but they would not learn of him: If this was not the Cafe, we muft fuppofe our Lord to be here excufing thofe that rejected him, and would not be prevailed with to come to him; for if they did not come to Chrift, because they could not; and the Reafon why they could not was, because they were not given him by the Father, in the Senfe fome understand thefe Words, they could not be blamed for not coming. But the Cafe was far other wife, for the Father would have given them, but they entertained unreafonable Prejudices against the Son of God, and would not fuffer them felves to be given to him: They hated the Light, and would not come to it, because their Deeds were evil, Joh. 3. 19, 20. Why, fays our Lord, Joh. 8 43. do ye not understand my Speech, because ye cannot hear my Words? And why could they not hear his Words? The following Verfe tells us, because they were of their Father the Devil, and the Lyfts of their Fa ther they would do.
