IMITATION

OF THE

ODE FROM CALLISTRATUS.

"When ev'ry arm was Freedom's shield,

"And ev'ry heart was Freedom's Altar."

Moore.

LET verdant laurel grace the victor's sword,

And crown with ivy the convivial board; Pledge the bold heroes scorning to obey, Who sav'd their country from despotic sway.

Thy deed-Harmodius! to remotest time, Shall live renown'd in many a distant clime; In fields Elysian shall thy spirit rest,

With Diomede, and great Pelides-blest.

ODE FROM CALLISTRATUS.

209

The victor's sword with myrtle wreaths entwine,
That smote Hipparchus, at Minerva's shrine;

Vainly the tyrant sought her sacred dome,

View Life's last current at the Altar foam.

And the brave Chiefs immortal shall remain,
Who rescued Athens, from her galling chain;
Taught her to glow with Freedom's conscious pride,

And bade her conqu❜ring galleys o'er the ocean ride.

P

IMITATION OF ARIOSTO'S

"LA VIRGINELLA E' SIMILE ALLA ROSA."

FORTY-SECOND STANZA, FIRST BOOK.

"Ut Flos in septis secretus nascitur hortis,
"Ignotus pecori, nullo contusus aratro ;

"Quem mulcent auræ, firmat sol, educat imber,
"Multi illum pueri, multæ optavere puellæ."

Catullus.

LIKE some sweet virgin in her youthful prime,
The rose adorns yon fragrant bank of thyme;
While the fond Lover, and his fav'rite fair,
By moonlight shades embibe the balmy air;
Delighted saunter thro' each flow'ry grove,
'Midst fairy dreams of innocence and love.

IMITATION, ETC,

"Till some rash spoiler in a luckless hour,

211

Thro' wanton mischief crops this beauteous flower;

Then the gay colours vanish from our sight,

And sink for ever in eternal night.

So the fair nymph in Pleasure's whirlwind tost,
Too late deplores the happiness she lost;

Too late with tears each broken vow will rue,
Scorn'd by the crowd-tho' pitied by the few.

IMITATION

OF

LORENZO DE MEDICI'S SONNET,

“CERCHI CHI VUOL LE POMPE, EGLI ALTI ONORI."

LET others revel in the marble hall,
Or cheer the banquet at a patron's call;
Apply for honour at Preferment's gate,
And humbly supplicate in domes of state
Grant me a cottage on the tranquil green,

With clust'ring woodbines thro' the casement seen,
Where some clear stream, and aromatic bower,
Adorn the garden fill'd with many a flower,
While the sweet night-bird shall her vespers sing,

And through each grove the playful squirrel spring.
