5. What further did He say

?

Who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

6. What may this signify to us Christians?

The being brought out of the bondage or captivity of sin.

IX. Which is the first commandment?

Thou shalt have none other gods but me.

1. Are there then any other gods?

None but false gods, which men ignorantly wor-. ship, but which are indeed no gods.

2. What are you forbidden in this first commandment? To have them, that is, to own them, or in any way to worship them.

3. And what are you here commanded? To worship the true God.

X. Which is the second commandment?

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my commandments.

1. What are you forbidden in this second commandment ? To worship in a false manner the true God.

2. What false worship is chiefly forbidden?

To bow down before an image.

3. What is an image?

A likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth.

4. What is a graven image?

One that is cut out with a sharp tool.

5. Why are you forbidden to worship any such image? Because God is a jealous God.

6. What does this mean?

That He will not have given to another what is due to Himself.

7. What doth He threaten upon disobedience?

To visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Him.

8. What doth he promise upon obedience?

To shew mercy unto thousands in them that love Him and keep His commandments. [III. 17, 18.] 9. How do we best prove that we love God?

By keeping His commandments.

10. What manner of worship doth He herc command? To worship Him in spirit and in truth.

XI. Rehearse the third commandment.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.

1. What is forbidden in this third commandment ? To take the name of the Lord our God in vain.

2. What is taking it in vain?

Making light of it with our lips, by common swearing, vain oaths, or saying prayers without devotion. 3. What doth God threaten to those who do so? That He will not hold them guiltless.

4. What does this mean?

That He will very certainly judge them guilty. 5. What then is here commanded?

That we use the name of God with reverence.

XII. Which is the fourth commandment?

:

Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant and thy maid-servant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven

and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

1. What doth God in this fourth commandment say to His people?

Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day. 2. What is remembering?

It is to call to mind or keep in mind what is already known.

3. What does the sabbath mean?

Rest from worldly work.

4. What difference is here put between the sabbath and the other days?

Six days shalt thou labour and do all that thou hast to do:

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant and thy maid-servant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates.

5. What persons are here forbidden to work? All members of every family.

6. What work is forbidden?

All manner of work for profit or pleasure. [XII. 3.] 7. What manner of work is not forbidden?

Any work of necessity or charity.

8. What reason is here given for keeping holy the sabbath? [XII. 3.]

Because in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day.

9. What did the Lord do because of this?

He blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it. 10. What is to hallow it?

Appointing it to be kept holy, [v. 34.], by rest from labour, and employment in devotion.

11. How then may children, who do no labour, keep it holy?

By ceasing from play, and learning to praise God.

XIII. Which is the fifth commandment?

Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

1. Whom are we here commanded to honour?

Father and mother, and all who are in like authority.

2. What is honouring them?

To obey them, or do what they bid, with reverence. 3. What doth God promise to those who do so?

Length of days in the land He giveth them.

4. What may this mean to Christians?
Eternal life in heaven above. [v. 24.]

XIV. Which is the sixth commandment?
Thou shalt do no murder.

1. What is murder?

To kill maliciously.

2. What else is forbidden in this sixth commandment? All kind of malice and hatred.

XV. Which is the seventh commandment?
Thou shalt not commit adultery.

1. What is adultery?

It is for husband or wife to be unfaithful.

2. What else is forbidden in this seventh commandment?
Any other uncleanness of thought, word, or deed.
XVI. Which is the eighth commandment?
Thou shalt not steal.

1. What is to steal?

Taking what belongs to any one else.

2. What else is forbidden in this eighth commandment ? Taking what I do not know to be my own, or am not sure I can pay for.

XVII. Which is the ninth commandment?

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

1. Who is your neighbour?

Any one to whom I can do any good. 2. What is bearing false witness against him? Saying what is untrue, to his hurt.

3. What else is forbidden in this ninth commandment? All manner of falsehood and deceit.

XVIII. Which is the tenth commandment?

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his.

1. What is to covet?

Desiring what belongs to any one else. [xvi. 1, 2.] 2. What are people here forbidden to covet?

Their neighbour's house, or wife, or servant, or maid, or ox, or ass, or any thing that is his.

3. How may we avoid coveting?

By being content with such things as we may have of our own.

XIX. What do you chiefly learn by these commandments?

I learn two things: my duty towards God, and my duty towards my neighbour.

1. What do you mean by your duty towards God?

Whatsoever I am bound to do towards Him. [Iv.2.] 2. What do you mean by your duty towards your neighbour? [XVII. 1.]

Whatever I am bound to do towards all mankind.

XX. What is your duty towards God?

My duty towards God is to believe in him, to fear him, and to love him, with all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, and with all my strength; to worship him, to give him thanks, to put my whole trust in him, to call upon him, to honour his holy name and his word, and to serve him truly all the days of my life.
