ANONYMOUS.

Faith, Hope, and Charity.

1 FAITH, hope, and love now dwell on earth,
And earth by them is blest;
But faith and hope must yield to love,
Of all the graces best.

2 Hope shall to full fruition rise,
And faith be sight above;

These are the means, but that the end,
For saints forever love.

Fear of God.

NEEDHAM.

1 HAPPY, beyond description, he
Who fears the Lord his God;
Who hears his threats with holy awe,
And trembles at his rod.

2 Fear, sacred passion, ever dwells
With its fair partner, love;
Blending their beauties, both proclaim
Their source is from above.

3 Let terrors fright th' unwilling slave,-
The child with joy appears;
Cheerful he does his Father's will,
And loves as much as fears.

4 Let fear and love, most holy God!
Possess this soul of mine;

Then shall I worship thee aright,
And taste thy joys divine.

Confidence in God. Ps. 27.

1 GOD is my strong salvation;
What foe have I to fear?
In darkness and temptation
My Light, my Help, is near.
Though hosts encamp around
Firm to the fight I stand;
What terror can confound me
With God at my right hand?
2 Place on the Lord reliance;
My soul, with courage wait;
His truth be thine affiance,
When faint and desolate;

me,

His might thine heart shall strengthen;
His love thy joy increase;

Mercy thy days shall lengthen;
The Lord will give thee peace.

MONTGOMERY.

Hearts placed on Things above.

1 WHILE through this changing world we roam From infancy to age,

Heaven is the Christian pilgrim's home,

His rest at every stage.

2 Thither his raptured thought ascends, Eternal joys to share;

There his adoring spirit bends,

While here he kneels in prayer.

3 From earth his freed affections rise,
To fix on things above,

Where all his hope of glory lies,
And love is perfect love.

4 Ah! there may we our treasure place,
There let our hearts be found,"
That still where sin abounded, grace
May more and more abound.

5 Henceforth our conversation be
With Christ before the throne;
Ere long we eye to eye shall see,

And know as we are known.

Adorn the Doctrine by godly Lives.
1 So let our lips and lives express
The holy gospel we profess;
So let our works and virtues shine,
Το prove the doctrine all divine.
2 Thus shall we best proclaim abroad
The honors of our Savior God,
When the salvation reigns within,
And grace subdues the power of sin.
3 Our flesh and sense must be denied,
Passion and envy, lust and pride;
While justice, temperance, truth and love
Our inward piety approve.

4 Religion bears our spirits up,
While we expect that blessed hope,
The bright appearance of the Lord;
And faith stands leaning on his word.

NOEL.

Longing for Heaven in Times of Trouble.

1 WHEN musing sorrow weeps the past, And mourns the present pain,

'Tis sweet to think of peace at last,
And feel that death is gain.

2 'Tis not that murmuring thoughts arise,
And dread a Father's will;
"Tis not that meek submission flies,
And would not suffer still;-

3 It is, that heaven-born faith surveys
The path that leads to light,
And longs her eagle plumes to raise,
And lose herself in sight.

4 It is, that harassed conscience feels
The pangs of struggling sin;
And sees, though far, the hand that heals
And ends the strife within.

5 0 let me wing my hallowed flight
From earth-born woe and care,
And soar above these clouds of night,
My Savior's bliss to share!

Liberality rewarded. Ps. 112.

1 HAPPY is he that fears the Lord,..
And follows his commands;
Who lends the poor without reward,
Or gives with liberal hands.

2 As pity dwells within his breast
To all the sons of need,

So God shall answer his request
With blessings on his seed.

3 No evil tidings shall surprise
His well-established mind;
His soul to God, his refuge, flies,
And leaves his fears behind.

4 In times of general distress,

Some beams of light shall shine
To show the world his righteousness,
And give him peace divine.

Love and Charity.

1 LET Pharisees of high esteem
Their faith and zeal declare,-
All their religion is a dream,
If love be wanting there.

2 Love suffers long with patient eye,
Nor is provoked in haste;
She lets the present injury die,
And long forgets the past.

3 Malice and rage, those fires of hell,
She quenches with her tongue;
Hopes and believes, and thinks no ill,
Though she endures the wrong.

4 She nor desires nor seeks to know
The scandals of the time;
Nor looks with pride on those below
Nor envies those that climb.

5 She lays her own advantage by,
To seek her neighbor's good:
So God's own Son came down to die,
And bought our lives with blood.

6 Love is the grace that keeps her power In all the realms above;

There faith and hope are known no more, But saints forever love.
