3 Oh, may these heavenly pages be
My ever dear delight;

And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light!

4 Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,
Be thou for ever near;

Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

[blocks in formation]

LORD, I have made thy word my choice,

My lasting heritage;

There shall my noblest powers rejoice,
My warmest thoughts engage.

2 I'll read the histories of thy love,
And keep thy laws in sight;

While through the promises I rove,
With ever fresh delight.

3 'T is a broad land, of wealth unknown,
Where springs of life arise,
Seeds of immortal bliss are sown,
And hidden glory lies.

4 The best relief that mourners have;
It makes our sorrows blest;
Our fairest hope beyond the grave,
And our eternal rest.

O

H that the Lord would guide my ways
To keep his statutes still !

Oh that my God would grant me grace
To know and do his will.

2 Order my footsteps by thy word,
And make my heart sincere ;
Let sin have no dominion, Lord,
But keep my conscience clear.

3 Make me to walk in thy commands—
"T is a delightful road;

Nor let my head nor heart nor hands
Offend against my God.

H

OW precious is the book divine,
By inspiration given!

Bright as a lamp, its doctrines shinę,
To guide our souls to heaven.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts
In this dark vale of tears;

Life, light, and joy it still imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

FAWCETT.

3 This lamp through all the tedious night
Of life, shall guide our way;

Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day.

How

[blocks in formation]

OW shall the young secure their hearts
And guard their lives from sin?

Thy word the choicest rules imparts,
To keep the conscience clean.

2 'Tis like the sun, a heavenly light,
That guides us all the day:

And through the dangers of the night,
A lamp to lead our way.

3 Thy precepts make me truly wise:
I hate the sinner's road;

I hate my own vain thoughts that rise,
But love thy law, my God.

4 Thy word is everlasting truth;

How pure is every page!

That holy book shall guide our youth,
And well support our age.

2 The Church from thee, her Master,
Received the gift divine;

And still that light she lifteth
O'er all the earth to shine:
It floateth like a banner

Before God's host unfurled;

It shineth like a beacon

Above the darkling world.

3 Oh, make thy Church, dear Saviour,
A lamp of burnished gold,

To bear before the nations
Thy true light as of old;
Oh, teach thy wandering pilgrims
By this their path to trace,

Till, clouds and darkness ended,
They see thee face to face.

"The morning cometh." Is. 21: 11.

W What its signs of promise are:

ATCHMAN, tell us of the night,

Traveler, o'er yon mountain's height,
See that glory-beaming star!
Watchman, does its beauteous ray
Aught of joy or hope foretell?
Traveler, yes it brings the day,
Promised day of Israel.

2 Watchman, tell us of the night;
Higher yet that star ascends:
Traveler, blessedness and light,
Peace and truth, its course portends.
Watchman, will its beams alone

Gild the spot that gave them birth?
Traveler, ages are its own :

See! it bursts o'er all the earth!

3 Watchman, tell us of the night,

For the morning seems to dawn:
Traveler, darkness takes its flight,
Doubt and terror are withdrawn.
Watchman, let thy wanderings cease;
Hie thee to thy quiet home:
Traveler, lo! the Prince of Peace,
Lo!. the Son of God is come!

Peace on earth, and mercy mild;
God and sinners reconciled."

2 Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Ris'n with healing in his wings.
3 Mild he lays his glory by ;
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth;
Born to give them second birth.
4 Joyful, all ye nations, rise;

Join the triumphs of the skies;
With th' angelic hosts proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Chanted at the wondrous birth,
Glory be to God on high,

Peace, good will to man on earth."
2 Him prophetic strains proclaim

King of kings, th' incarnate Word;
Great and Wonderful his name,
Prince of Peace, the mighty God!
