3. Turn the direct narrative in the following passage into the indirect :

(a.) Portia now desired Shylock to let her look at the bond and when she had read it, she said- This bond is forfeited, and by this the Jew may lawfully claim a pound of flesh to be by him cut off nearest Antonio's heart. Then she said to Shylock, Be merciful, take the money and bid me tear the bond. But no meroy would the cruel Shylock show, and he said-By my soul I swear, there is no power in the tongue of man to alter me. Why then Antonio, said Portia, you must prepare your bosom for the knife; and while Shylock was sharpening a long kuife, with great eagerness to cut off the pound of flesh, Portia said to Antonio-Have you anything to say? Antonio with the calm resignation said, that he had but little to say, for he had prepared his mind for death.

5. Re-write the following, (a) without Imperative, (b) changing the metaphor into a simile, (c) changing the voices of the verbs, (d) changing the added words or phrases into sentences, (e) changing the complex sentences into simple ones.

(a.) Give me the problem and I shall work it. Do what you will, you will not succeed. (6.) Far from the maddening crowd's ignoble strife,

Their silver wishes never learned to stray,
Along the cool sequestered vale of life,

They kept the noiseless tenor of their way. (c.) They refused me the favour. I forgave him his fault. Already I have become deeply ashamed of judgments which I had once pronounced, of idle hopes I had once encouraged, false admonitions or contempts with which once I had sympathized.

(d.) I come merely to see you. He ought to have answered at least one question. Only he came.
