'Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of all mercies, and the God of all comfort' (2 Cor. i. 3).

In an age like the present, when new creeds are the order of the day, it surely behoves all men to seek an answer to Pilate's question, 'What is truth?' This may have been merely a meditative observation. We have no recorded answer. Or it may have been asked in the spirit of to-day, that of tolerant cynicism; and Christ, understanding the hearts of men, left the task of solving the problem for all generations. The question certainly comes to all alike. We may, like Felix, put off the consideration of it until a more convenient season,' but it will come again, persistently demanding an answer. It is not wisdom to dismiss it unsolved, or to leave the solution, as some do, entirely to those whose profession it is to deal with these subjects. They are but men, human as we, and therefore liable to error. Only the light of God shining into our

hearts can clear away the mists surrounding and obscuring the Truth. In His Light we see light, and Christ is the Light of God given to the world 'that they might have light more abundantly'-our Example of Holiness. It is the duty of every created being to answer this question for himself. It is not, and never was, in the power of any man or woman to answer it for you.

They may help you, but no man may make agreement to God for another man's soul. The answer lies between our Maker and our own soul, and we must seek it from God.

The answer Abraham gave to Dives in the parable of Christ, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead,' is for all men; for the only guidance man has is the Word of God, the record of God's dealings with man from all time. To know the will of God as revealed in His Holy Word and to try to obey His commands is indeed to be a child of God, and to be filled with the joy that God alone can give. Perfect love casteth out all fear,' while it levels with the dust all those idols whose feet are of clay. There is much to be done for God our Heavenly Father to-day. Look over the fields; the harvest is plenteous-so plenteous, indeed, that unless all help it will be long ere it is gathered in.

A million bishops would not avail unless all children of God devote their lives and labour and talents to this work of love, that the kingdoms of the world may become the kingdom of our God. Do not think this work is the work of the Church alone; it is your work and my work, and the work of every man, woman or child whom God calls to work in His vineyard. The call is to all, but hearts are filled with the things of this world, and ears are deaf to the call of God. Deaf and blind to all that is best, we forsake our Father's home to wander into a far land. But God is Love; He will welcome all who return to Him in sorrow and repentance, and after we have suffered awhile He will make us perfect. God is not poor that He cannot give-aye, more than we can ever ask or think. God, our Heavenly Father now, as from all time, is the answer to 'What is Truth?' for every soul. Prove these words for yourselves and the Truth shall make you free. The mission of Christ to this world was to make known to sinful and rebellious man the love of God our Father.

Many of us are perfectly consistent in our daily lives; let us endeavour to be consistent in our religion also. Do not think God requires you to believe anything which your sense of right and

wrong tells you is not justifiable. For instance, by the grace of God, I believe in His beloved Son Jesus Christ; I believe in the miracles He wrought during the three years of His active ministry on earth. I also believe the words of Christ that if we had sufficient faith we could do the same, for I believe all power is with and from God. I can believe also in the miraculous birth of Christ and His resurrection from the dead, for with God all things are possible. But there are some records of Christ in the New Testament which I am unable to reconcile with my belief in Christ. It is to me inconceivable that some of the words, acts, and beliefs recorded in the New Testament and the love of God and man could have proceeded from one mind, and that the mind of Jesus Christ, our Master and Example. Rather are they the work of many minds, some of which were unenlightened. Yet within the New Testament, by the inspiration of God, the Spirit of Christ still lives, and all who seek may find. So flesh and blood do not reveal this Truth to man, but God alone. If we are perfectly consistent, we shall not allow our minds to be blinded or confused by the doctrine of infallibility of anything human, or by any thought or doctrine of human origin. We must always, in any doctrine we profess or accept,
