TO THE

THIRD VOLUME.

I AT length deliver to the Public the Third Volume of the

Memoirs of John Duke of Marlborough, later, indeed, than I promised; but the delay was unavoidable in consequence of the quantity of interesting materials, which I was obliged to consult and arrange. I feel much satisfaction in the favourable reception which this work has experienced from the Public, and am no less gratified by the reflection, that I have been enabled, from the communications I have received, to supply a great desideratum in our national History, by developing the life and character of one of our most illustrious statesmen and warriors.

I have again to express my warmest acknowledgments to Major Smith, for the continuance of his kind and able assistance in the military plans and details; and particularly for the plan of the movements preparatory to the battle of Malplaquet, as well as for the masterly delineation of the military operations in the campaign of 1711.
