HYMN 4.

From Psalm c.

1. BEFORE Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations, bow with sacred joy;
Know that the Lord is God alone,

He can create, and He destroy.

2. His sov'reign power, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and form'd us men ;
And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,
He brought us to his fold again.

[ocr errors]

3. We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs;
High as the heav'ns our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.

4. Wide as the world is thy command;
Vast as eternity thy love;

Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

(Denmark, Savoy.)

HYMN 5.

"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." ROм. viii. 14.

1. COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove!
With light and comfort from above;
Be thou our Guardian, thou our Guide ;
O'er every thought and step preside.

2. The light of truth to us display,

And make us know and choose thy way;
Plant holy fear in every heart,
That we from God may not depart.

3. Lead us to holiness, the road

That we must take to dwell with God;
Lead us to Christ, the living way,
Nor let us from his pastures stray.

4. Lead us to God, our final rest,
To be with Him for ever blest;
Lead us to heaven, its joys to share,
Fulness of joy for ever there.

(Dawn.)

HYMN 6.

"The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things."

JOHN xiv. 26.

1. COME, Holy Spirit, from above
Impart thy gifts of grace and love;
Come visit with celestial fire,
And with Thyself our souls inspire,
That we may joy in things divine,
And to the word of God incline.

2. Whatever ills our souls befal,
Thou art the Comforter in all;
Proceeding from the throne of grace
To bless and guide our mortal race,
The strength of that almighty hand
Whose power can heav'n and earth command.

3. O Holy Spirit, our defence,

Thy heavenly light to us dispense,
From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make us temples worthy Thee!
Chase from our hearts our deadly foe,
And love, and joy, and peace bestow.

HYMN 7.

"Oh, how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day."

Ps. cxix. 97.

1. FATHER of mercies, in thy word,

What endless glories shine!

For ever be thy name adored
For this thy gift divine.

2. Here the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heavenly peace around;

And life, and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.

3. Oh may these heavenly pages be
Our souls' sincere delight!

And still new beauties may we see,
And still increasing light.

4. Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,
Be Thou for ever near;

Teach us to love thy sacred word,
And see our Saviour there!

HYMN 8.

"In every thing give thanks." 1 THESS. v. 18.

1. FATHER of mercies! let our songs
With Thee acceptance find;
Thy loving kindness we confess
To us and all mankind.

2. Thanks for creation are thy due,
For life preserved by Thee,
And all the blessings life affords,
So great, and yet so free!

3. Thanks for redemption, above all,
To us in Jesus given;

Thanks for the means of grace on earth,
And for the hope of heaven.

4. Oh! let a sense of this thy grace
Our best affections move,

That while our lips thy praise proclaim,
Our hearts may feel thy love.

(St. George's.)
