whatever may damp their ardour in the pursuit of this world; that they may learn to flee from its snares, as for the life of their souls; and so leave all for Christ, that they may not be condemned with the world, but be saved in the great day of the Lord Jesus.

And such as are loose and profane, and scandalous in their lives, rebelling against heaven, and committing all uncleanness with greediness, scoffing at the followers of Jesus, and deriding all that is serious and holy, refusing to be ashamed, and hating to be reformed (how dangerous and desperate soever their case may be ;) O Lord our God, interpose with thine almighty power to rescue them from destruction, and to pluck them as brands out of the fire. They are not past thy help and cure; for thou callest those things that are not, as if they were and canst change the leopard's spots, and the Ethiopian's skin; and canst bring, not only something out of nothing, but the greatest good even out of the worst evil. O! where sin has abounded, let thy grace much more abound. Lord God Almighty, make bare thine arm, and let signs and wonders be done in the name of thy holy child, Jesus. Work effectually we pray thee, to heal the diseases of their souls; make them sensible of their guilt and misery; that, as prodigals coming to themselves, they may arise, and go to their Father, and, from being dead, become alive again; from being lost, may be found. O make them yet to turn so thoroughly from their evil ways, that they may come to see the beauties of holiness, and delight to do thy blessed will, O God, and obtain an inheritance among them that are sanctified, through faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR INSENSIBLE SINNERS.

O LORD, the great Almighty God, who quickenest the dead, and callest those things that are not, as if they were! there is nothing impossible with thee: but the things that resist all the skill and power of man, are (with the greatest facility) brought to pass by thine almighty arm. Thou, the living God, canst speak life to souls that are dead in trespasses and sins; and canst make even such as lie in the grave of their habitual corruptions, to hear the voice of the Son of God, and live. It is the great work of thy eternal Spirit, O Lord, to convince the world of sin; and to make inconsiderate careless sinners to know themselves, and be concerned as they ought, about the welfare of their souls. O that these poor insensible creatures, who have sinned, till their consciences are seared and past feeling, may find mercy from the Lord, and may yet come to feel in themselves the irresistible power of thy grace! O that thou wouldest open their eyes to see their case; and soften their hearts, to bewail their sins; and turn their course, that they may flee from the wrath to come! Blessed Lord, awaken them with thy terrors, before they be overtaken by thy judgements! O break in upon their souls by thy mighty convictions, to bring them into bitterness for their sins and let thy quick and powerful word pierce their hearts, to make them inquire in earnest, what they must do to be saved.

O that they did but apprehend their case, and know their transgressions! that, instead of continuing unconcerned (as if nothing were amiss with them) and indulging themselves in pleasures (as if

they were in the happiest condition) they were struck down into the deepest heaviness and consternation, refusing to be comforted! O that they might go mourning all the day long, yea, even roar for the disquietness of their hearts! O God of all grace! be thou pleased in mercy to show such seeming severity; to write bitter things against them, and make them confess their former iniquities make them to feel now the weight of all their sins, that they may not feel it eternally, when past a remedy. Direct and empower thy messengers, O Lord, to speak to the conviction of their minds : enable them to cry aloud, and not spare, and to show thy rebellious creatures their transgressions and their sins. Yea, make thy word in the mouth of thy servants as fire, to enflame and rouse the consciences of such drowsy sinners, that they may come to perceive what a lost condition they are in; and be restless in themselves, till, coming unto Christ, they find rest unto their souls. Ŏ thou almighty God! do marvellous things, worthy of thyself, in taking away that which blinds the minds, and hardens the hearts of such stupid creatures; and bring them out of the worst lethargy and deadness; that they may understand themselves, and seek after God, and follow the things which make for their peace, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR ALL THAT DESIRE OUR PRAYERS.

O LORD God of the spirits of all flesh! thy Word requires us to pray for others, as well as for ourselves; and to call upon thee as our common Fa

ther in Christ Jesus. And though I am unworthy to address thy heavenly Majesty either for myself or others, yet, in the hope of thy mercy, and under a sense of my duty, I take upon me to become a humble petitioner to thee, my Lord, in behalf of all such as desire to be partakers of my prayers. O that all of them might share in thy rich mercies, according to their several wants and necessities! They are known to thee by name; O let them be known of thee in the number of thy children. Thou knowest what they most need and chiefly desire: O thou gracious Giver of all good, answer them in the desires of their hearts, as far as they desire the things that are right and good. And, where they desire what is unfitting and hurtful, convince them of their error, that they may not persist in it: and, where they see not the things of their peace, or are indifferent towards that which is most for their good, O Lord, show them the saving way, and grant them an unfeigned love for it, and true zeal to follow it. Bless them, gracious Father, with so much of the world's good, as thou knowest to be good for them: but especially remember them with the favour which thou bearest to thy people. Instruct them, Lord, in the knowledge of thy will; and show them what they must do to be saved. And make them faithful to practise according to the light which thou art pleased to give them: yea, incline their hearts to take pleasure in the performance of their duty. Bless them, O God of all grace, with that favour of thine, in which is life, and with all spiritual blessings in heavenly things in Christ Jesus. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR A WOMAN IN TRAVAIL.

O ALMIGHTY Lord God, who bringest to the birth and givest strength to bring forth; show favour we beseech thee, to thy servant, in the time of her need and distress; and be not far from her, when trouble is nigh to her, and lies sore and heavy upon her; but let her experience thy help, at hand, according to the necessity of her case. O mitigate her pangs, and support her under the pain and pressure that are so grievous to be borne. And grant her, Lord, a timely, safe, and happy deliverance; and let her see the fruit of her womb, with such comfort and joy, as may make her forget her past anguish, and with a truly thankful heart give glory to thee for all the rich mercies vouchsafed unto her. But if, in thine unsearchable wisdom, thou hast ordained otherwise, and hast decreed that the event should not correspond with the desires which we have presumed to express before thee; if thou hast willed that this expected birth should prove an occasion of thine handmaid's death; O hear us, good Lord, (we most earnestly beseech thee) for her precious soul. Let that be safe in thy blessed hands: let it be fitted for its appearance before thy tribunal: and let her experience that best of all deliverances, a deliverance from all sin and misery, into the perfection of holiness, and the fulness of joy; there to live in thy love, and to sing thy praise for evermore. Amen.
