In the present impression of Coles on 66 God's Sovereignty,” the fourteenth edition of 1768, (published by G. Keith, T. Longman, and E. & C. Dilly,) has been exactly followed, with the exception of more correct readings, in three passages, that have been adopted from the celebrated one by Romaine, which was published by subscription, at Bath, in 1776, and concerning which that venerable Clergyman expressed a hope that it would be “the most correct that ever was published.”

Numerous errors, however, had crept into both those editions, especially with regard to the quotations from Scripture, which were often ascribed to wrong books, or not to their proper chapters and verses.

These errors seem to have been multiplied in every succeeding reprint, till at length the modern copies had become faulty in a high degree. A careful revision of the texts as they severally occur, and a diligent collation of the best early copies, have enabled the Editor to produce, not such an immaculate edition as will correspond with the sanguine hope expressed by the Rev. William Romaine, but one that will bear a comparison with the hest of those which have preceded it, and will ensure the entire approval of the admirers of Coles.
