THIS small collection is not designed to supersede, but intended as a SUPPLEMENT TO Dr. Watts's Psalms and Hymns. The principal object of its compilation was to furnish a concise work, containing selections from our most eminent Evangelical Poets, in a variety of metres, at a moderate price. For the sentiments it contains, the Compiler makes no apology, being those he has endeavoured to make prominent in his PubJic Ministrations. To the people of his present and former charge, he dedicates it as a token of his affection and solicitude for their best interests; to the Great Head of the Church, he commends this feeble attempt to exalt his divine glories; and if this little work, compiled during a long season of severe domestic affiction, be owned by the Holy Spirit, to the benefit of one soul, to Jehovah shall be all the glory.
