1 Exclusive of Alaska, 590,884 square miles, Guam, 210 square miles, Hawaii, 6,449 square miles, Panama Canal Zone, 436 square miles, Philippine Islands, which contain 115,026 square miles, Porto Rico, 3,435 square miles, Samoa, 77 square miles.

2 Does not include the water surface of the oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Great Lakes, lying within the jurisdiction of the United States.

3 Reduction from 1910 figures of 116 square miles due to building Pathfinder and Shoshone reservoirs (46 square miles of water surface) in Wyoming and several reservoirs in connection with irrigation projects (70 square miles of water surface) in Montana.
