5 By their salvation, recompense
The sorrows I endured;

Just to the merits of Thy Son,
And faithful to Thy word.

6 Eternal life, at His request,
To every saint is given;
Safety below, and after death,
The plenitude of Heaven.

7 Founded on right Thy prayers avail
The Father smiles on Thee;

And now, Thou in Thy kingdom art,
Dear Lord remember me.

8 Let the much incense of Thy prayer
In my behalf ascend;
And, as its virtue, so my praise
Shall never, never end.

FROM earthly slumbers saints awake,
Unite with angel lays;

And sing in songs of joyful sound,
The Heav'nly Shiloh's praise.

2 He wings His way to lower worlds,
From glory's heights in Heaven-
The long expected Child is born,
Jehovah's Son is given.

3 Go, visit Bethlehem to day,
Before the manger fall,

Give glory to the Virgin born,
Confess Him Lord of all.

4 While eastern sages offer gifts,
And ranks of angels sing;

With feeble strains of humble praise,
Your contrite spirits bring.

5 Such off'rings at the Infant shrine,
More welcome there shall be,
Than all the gems the earth contains,
Or the more boundless sea.

6 All glory to the Mystery!
Jesus, Immanuel!

Ten thousand harps for evermore
Th' Incarnate Name shall swell!

Math. iii. 13-17.

ROM ancient Galilee,
To Jordan's swelling wave,

Our Elder Brother comes to seek
Therein a wat❜ry grave.

But John forbids the Lord

And comest Thou to me?

I have more need Thou Lamb of God,
To be baptized of Thee.

That we with sacred pleasure should

All righteousness fulfil.

So Jesus is baptiz'd!

The gates of light unfold!

The Dove of peace anoints the Lord,
As prophets once foretold.

But hark! the voice of God,
Concludes the glorious sight!
Lo! this is my beloved Son,
In whom is my delight!

FAR off from the dwellings of man

8 double.

The Holy Redeemer was led,
Ere His heav'nly mission began,
And forty days fasted from bread.
In depths of the wilderness waste,
An hour of great conflict arrives,
That malice of hell He might taste,
The devil temptation contrives.

2 Though once in fair Eden of old,
The first Adam yielded and fell,
And thus his posterity sold

To vengeance of wrath and of hell;
Not lust of the flesh, nor the eyes,
With this world's allurement and pride,
Brought near by the father of lies,
Could draw the great Saviour aside!

3 In weariness Jesus was found,

Yet wielded the conquering sword-
He brought the arch-fiend to the ground,
O'ercome by the word of the Lord:
Thus vanquished, to Jesus he bends,
The enemy hastes to depart―
A convoy the Victor attends,
And ministers strength to His heart.

4 My soul, in the strength of thy Lord,
March on till thy warfare shall end;
For thee, He o'ercame with His word,
For thee, He still lives to defend ;
Soon Satan's assaults shall be past,
Th' oppressor no longer pursue;
A Conqu❜ror be found at the last,
And more than a Conqu'ror too!

TO Tabor's favoured mount repair,

And view the sacred vision there
In contemplation sweet;

Let faith expand her swiftest wings,
And flee afar from mortal things,
The Christ of God to greet.

2 Transfigur'd, lo! in brightest form
The Saviour once in Beth'lem born;
Makes known His regal power;
Saints glorified beside Him stand,
Who long had reached that better land,
They share th' auspicious hour.

3 The glory of the ages fled,

They cast around His sacred head,
Of law and prophets too;
On scenes of future ages treat,
While with the Lord in converse sweet
This Tabor brings to view.

4 The coming reign of Zion's King,
The fleeting years will shortly bring;
When sleeping saints shall rise;
And those remaining till that day,
By Jesus chang'd, shall haste away
To meet Him in the skies.

5 Three favor'd ones of Jesu's fold,
Their Lord in mantling light behold,
And as they venture near;
With thrilling wonder they rejoice;
Peter exclaims with joyful voice,
'Tis good Lord to be here.

6 Tho' at the mount these would remain,
Their heav'nly visitants retain,
A cloud bears them away;
This is my Son, proclaims aloud
A voice from out that parting cloud,
Hear what your Lord will say.

7 When our returning Lord shall come To call His longing children home, The glory seen before

Shall wide expand, in vision bright,
Fill Salem's courts with floods of light,
And never vanish more.

Luke xxii. 44.

O! prostrate on the sacred ground,
When darkest night reigned all around,
The Agonizing Saviour fell,

In combat, both with wrath and hell.

2 He is alone-most dreadful hour-
The law and sin exert their power-
His body's bath'd in bloody sweat,
His spirit sorrows unto death.

L. M.

3 He feels the pang-the pois'nous smart---
Arrows of wrath pierce deep His heart-
No mortal arm can help Him bear,
No angel may His burden share.
