TO THE CHURCH AND CONGREGATION

MEETING FOR THE WORSHIP OF AL

MIGHTY GOD, IN ADULLAM CHAPEL,
OXFORD.

BELOVED,

The annexed compositions have been arranged, to help you in your expressions of united praise and thanksgiving to the Great and Glorious JEHOVAH. Many of the following hymns are original, some are anonymous, and the remainder have been carefully selected from various authors.

My aim has been to find suitable words, consonant with the great truths of the glorious gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; and that it may please Him, " of whom are all things, and by whom are all things," to bless this feeble attempt, to the promotion of His own glory, and to your spiritual comfort, is the earnest prayer of,

Beloved,

Your affectionate

Pastor and Friend,

W. WILLEY.

Henley House,

Summertown, near Oxford.

SONGS

FOR

ZION'S PILGRIMS.

Deut. vi. 4.

GREAT Father! we adore Thy name!

Hail, Jesus! Zion's King!
And Holy Comforter! to Thee
Our humble praise we bring.

2 O Thou Eternal Three in One!
Thy wand'ring people's guide-
Let sov'reign grace within our souls,
By power divine abide.

3 So shall Thy church inspir'd by Thee,
In faith and hope increase,
And travel thro' life's wilderness,
To scenes of joy and peace.

4 And when our pilgrim feet arrive
On Canaan's brighter shore;
We will exalt our Triune God
In anthems evermore.

[blocks in formation]

HAIL, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord!
Be endless praise to Thee!
Supreme, Essential One, adored
In co-eternal Three.

2 Enthroned in everlasting state,
E're time its round began,
'Twas Thy bless'd counsel to create
Thy creature-image, Man.

3 Seraphs, Isaiah's vision shew'd,
Bright seraphs spread their wings,
While to their Holy Lord and God,
His elect Legion sings.

4 To Thee, by mystic pow'rs on high
Were lowliest praises given;
When John's apocalyptic eye
Saw the pure hosts of heaven.

5 All that the name of creature bear,
To praise Thee there aspire;
"Tis ours an humbler part to share,
Warm'd by a kindred fire.

Psal. xlv.

Fairest of all men!

Thy lips with grace are pure;

For God hath blessed Thee with gifts,

For ever to endure.

About Thee gird Thy sword,
O Jesus! Prince elect!

With honor, glory, and renown,
Thou art most richly decked.

3 Thy royal seat O Lord!
For ever shall remain,

Because the sceptre of Thy realm
Doth righteousness maintain.

Thine arrows sharp and keen,
Their hearts so sore shall sting,
That all Thy foes shall crouch to Thee,
Thy people own Thee King.

Isa. lvii. 18.

Holy Ghost! Eternal God!

Descending from above;

Thou fill'st the soul thro' Jesus blood,
With faith, and hope, and love.

2 Thou comfortest the heavy heart,
By sin and grief oppress'd;
Thou to the dead dost life impart,
And to the weary rest.

3 Thy sweet communion charms the soul,
And gives true peace and joy;
Which Satan's power can ne'er control,
Nor all his wiles destroy.

4

Let no false comfort lift us up

To confidence that's vain;

Nor let their faith and courage droop,
Who love the Lamb once slain.

Isa. liv. 4.

Thou, whose everlasting love
Sustains the troubled breast;

The living in Jerusalem,

Resort to Thee-their rest.
